USB2.0 PCMCIA card and Ghost

#1 Post by Msmax » Mon Jan 01, 2007 4:05 pm

Need your advise/help on this.

I like to use Ghost for backup/restore purposes of my T21 internal harddisk to/from an external USB2.0 harddisk.

This works fine with the built in USB 1.1 port but is very slow.
So I thought of buying a PCMCIA card with USB2.0 ports and connect the external harddisk to one of these ports.

When Ghost boots from the cd there is an option to choose for an USB2.0 driver to be used, but this does not work because the PCMCIA drivers are not installed under the DOS operating system.

Does anyone have an idea/sample file how to get this going?

Thanks for your help, Msmax

I believe this is what you need: PC Card drivers for DOS - ThinkPad

EDIT: I just fixed bad link above.

If the DOS drivers that GomJabbar referenced do not help with your problem, then may I suggest an alternative given the software tool you already have (Ghost)? If you do not already have all of the hardware needed, then it may cost around $30-$45 to get them from eBay or the Marketplace. Also, there is a potential problem when performing a backup/clone with the procedure I'm about to outline. Read carefully to understand the issue.

I have been using Ghost 2003 to backup/clone my 600E/X and T2x systems for many months. What I use for hardware is an Ultrabay hard drive adapter and an external floppy disk drive. Since the T2x systems do not have a built-in floppy port, I use an A/T/R/X port replicator which does have such a port. The basic steps are:

- Access your T21's BIOS and configure the boot order sequence as floppy, CD, then hard drive.
- Create a Ghost boot floppy disk using the utility that comes with the program. Only the basic DOS system with the Ghost program is needed. No special drivers required.
- Shutdown the laptop.
- Attach the floppy drive to the port replicator.
- Exchange the Ultrabay hard drive adapter (with backup drive) with the regular optical drive.
- Place the laptop into the port replicator.
- Put the Ghost boot floppy into the drive.
- Double-check to see that the floppy drive is connected to the port replicator, the boot floppy is firmly inserted into the drive and that the laptop is fully inserted into the port replicator. Here's the warning: If the laptop is allowed to boot from the normal hard drive while a bootable drive is in the Ultrabay, you can mess up one or both disks. Windows can get confused as to which is the real bootable disk and begin writing changes into the registry which can cause the disk to become inaccessible.
- Power up the laptop. To be safe, you can also press the F12 key to access the boot device menu and then specify the floppy drive. If you have previously changed the BIOS startup order, then this is really not necessary.
- After Ghost is loaded, Disk #1 is the one in the laptop and Disk #2 is the one in the Ultrabay. Simply select the source and destination drives as appropriate.
- When the backup/clone operation is complete, click the "Continue" option, then click "Quit" to exit Ghost to return to the DOS prompt. Do not select the "Reset Computer" option.
- Power off the system, remove the Ultrabay adapter and return the laptop to its normal state.

Hardware requirements:
- A/T/R/X port replicator (FRU 02K8668) - $10
- External floppy drive case (FRU 05K6187)
- Floppy drive (FRU 05K8874) - $10 for drive and case
- Ultrabay 2000 2nd hard disk drive adapter (FRU 08K6067) - $30
