What is this mystery panel on my T23 (next to the speaker)

#1 Post by alagregg » Tue Jan 02, 2007 7:39 am

I have been using a T22 and a T23, both have a plastic panel on the front left
(just below the palm rest and to the left of the speaker grill)

opening up the laptop shows there is a connector on the motherboard (althougth it is slightly obscured by the hard drive housing). this connector has two electrical contacts.

I am assuming there is something that can be placed here, however it is not even mentioned in the technical manual.

Anyone know what it is for ?

ps. i have considered possibly I/R or a audio connector, but the laptop already has all of them.

Maybe it is for the optional RFID module?

yeah i think your right.

more carefully reading the technical manual i have found the reference to it.

what exactly was the RFid tag for ?, is it just so big companies can track thier laptops ?. as i can't seem to find much about it

intrestingly, i have just placed a wifi antenna behind the plastic panel, and it works much better than at the edge of the screen. (althougth it required some dremel work).

i would imagine the rfid tag would be useful if a client wanted to use the laptop to track a warehouse full of rfid tagged items...

ibm being a big iron company would want laptops that could be used to support their enterprise products

interesting

does anyone know if the newer laptops support this?
