video and power-on problem

#1 Post by Abstraction » Fri Jan 05, 2007 11:35 pm

I have a T30 which was starting to have video problems. after using the computer for a while, the video would lock up and give some weird horizontal/vertical lines. at that point, the computer would be completely non-responsive. i couldnt FN-f4 or f12 to put it to sleep, etc.

I thought it may be a short in the video ribbon (which looked like it had a lot of wear and tear, so i took apart the computer to do some troubleshooting. after a lot of power cycles and reseating of the video ribbon, i still hadn't solved my problem.

here's where it gets bad though, i accidently reseated the cable while the computer was still powered on (yes, brilliant by all accounts). Now when i try to power on the computer, the fan and harddrive power up for a couple seconds, then die. if i try to turn it on again, nothing happens at all. to get it to power on (and die) again, i have to unplug it and leave the battery out for a few seconds.

This is an old computer of mine, so i'm not TOO concerned, however it'd be nice to have this system up and running. does it sound like i just fried my motherboard?

any help is appreciated.

Sounds like as if the GPU is dead.

Did you check all the fuses on board already?
If so then I think the MB is history.

I Did have the same with a T40p mainboard.

try pushing down the gpu and see if the problem persists. the gpu is accessible by removing the keyboard.

update: no luck pushing down on the GPU. i still have the same symptoms.

comptuer powers on, i can see the cpu fan spin, and hear the hard drive spin up, then the computer shuts off.

only way to turn it on again is to unplug and wait.

The fuses are soldered on the system board.

They are marked Fx.
