What's the best video driver for Savage IX in T22 ?

#1 Post by Araj » Mon Jan 15, 2007 3:56 pm

Can anyone tell me the best video driver for the S3 Savage IX in my T22? I'm having some issues with Direct3D.

My current driver is the one that XPSP2 put there for me, namely the Microsoft Certified IX 1014 driver v. 6.13.10.7050 from S3, dated 22 Jan 2003. As far as I recall, the T22 doesn't actually have the IX 1014 onboard - but the driver works okay except for a few glitches in Direct 3D,

Thanks in advance for any help

Welcome to the forums, Araj!

Be aware that although DirectX 9 can be installed, the Savage cards in these T2x are hardwired for DirectX 6. So if all's fine except the games, I'd use whatever is installed for you.

You can also go to Lenovo's support site and download the official IBM drivers for the T2x.

The version there is 70.90.50, with a 2003/2/22 release.

hope this helps.

Thanks Musti, I'll check the driver out later.

Funnily enough, it's not games which I have a problem with, it's a media player called JRiver Media Center, which in the latest version uses Direct3D for the "Theater View". JRMC is more or less indispensible to me and I'd like to make use of the improvements in v.12.

The driver turns out to be just the same one I had - when I go to check, it still shows 6.13.10.7050

Thanks anyhow

you could try downloading from the chipset manufacturer, in this case savage.

i have no idea if the drivers there are newer than your ones, but they are claimed to be the newest
try here: (i think this is the right page for your graphics)
http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/ ... _290298drv

it is highly unlikley that there will be any newer windows drivers then this, as chipset manufacturers are usually the best source for the latest drivers.

if this doesn't help you could try looking for other laptop manufactureres who have used the same graphics chipset in their laptops, and see if they have any drivers which help. althougth you may need to edit the driver's inf to allow it to install on a thinkpad.

alternativley, as a last resort you could try installing older drivers and see if this helps at all (this is known to fix some graphics problems, sometimes).

just checking the date you quoted, against the one on the s3 website, these drivers would appear to be older than yours.

however it is still worth trying them as this sometimes solves problems, as previously said

also if you are using a driver that came with windows, such drivers generally have poor Direct X support (at least from my expierence with gforce based laptops).

The driver wasn't the one that came with XP, it came from the Windows Update site, and from looking at the files sizes and dates, seem identical to the one available from Lenovo. The drivers on the S3 site do indeed appear to be older. I tried installing them anyway but XP refuses, saying it cannot find a driver which is a better match in the unpacked archive...
