arrgh! blue screen on t23

#1 Post by thun_optimus » Fri Jan 26, 2007 4:16 am

so i was using my t23 laptop and a blue screen appeared. if i remember, the screen said that the pc is shutting down or restarting because of memory management or something. it iwill boot up again and all would be well for like 20 minutes then the blue screen appears again. i formatted it and reinstalled windows xp. while xp was installing, the blue screen appeared again. correct me if i am wrong but is the problem my ram? i am using a gateway (NEW) and i hate it. my t23 is way better to me. i need someones help cause i miss my thinkpad...

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The blue screen could be your memory acting up or possibly a bad spot on the hard drive. You should be able to determine which one it is by downloading PC Doctor from here:

PC Doctor for T2x (diskettes)

or here

PC Doctor for T2x .ISO image (hosted on my site)

You can use either one of these methods to obtain a bootable diskette or CD which contains the PC Doctor diagnostic program. Once booted, select the appropriate test from the Diagnostic menu. This program contains many tests which will check out about 85-90% of your system. Alternately, a good stand-alone memory diagnostic is memtest86+ which is available from here:

memtest.org

(Looks like a new version was just released. I've been using version 1.65.) There are also different files to download if you want to create a boot floppy, USB or CD.

i'll second that advice.

in my expierence the hard disk is the most common reason for blue screening. But i'd run a full test on everything using pc doctor.

The full hard drive test does take a long time though so have patience.

good luck in finding what's causing it.

thanks for the reply everyone. i don't think that it is possible for me to do any of the following because the pc won't start anymore. i can't even load windows xp on it. i am guessing that i need to buy a hard drive. i needed a new one anyway. it only has 30 gb (27 since xp was installed). anyway, when i noticed the problem was when my hard drive had like 2 gb left due to my downloading. i was going to burn the movies, music etc. to a dvd but never got to it. when i began to save another music file (thus taking up more space on my hard drive), the blue screen appeared.

(ps) how do i create a bootable cd b/c i dont have a floppy disk drive, only a cd drive...

First, you need the CD disk image. These are ISO files. Next you will need a program that can record that image to a CD. Windows XP cannot do it by itself. You can use Nero, RecordNow or whatever you use. A free program called ISO Recorder (google it) is a powertoy for XP only. It uses XP's CD burning engine to burn disk images. Be sure to get the right version.

see the other thread in here about the page dumping/memory issue - that's your problem without doubt!
