Random shut downs

#1 Post by lutami » Wed Jan 31, 2007 9:57 am

T20…256 MB… 6GB HD…used only for surfing net and email.

AVG anti virus…Ccleaner… Ad-aware…Battery maximizer…no other apps…I’ve run these and system comes up clean…BIOS is up to date.

For some time now I’ve had a pink screen on boot but within a minute or so of boot it clears and goes back clear and bright…read here that it’s most probably the backlight…replacing it looks complicated so I’ve been putting it off…

Recently it randomly shuts down…battery light and the one the other side of the sleep light that's on the bottom right hinge and the little circled z that's by the on/off button (don't know what they're called) stays green.

It takes at least 30 secs of depressing the on off switch for these lights to go out leaving just the battery light green.

When trying to reboot there’s sometimes a rattling sound from either the HD or fan…can’t really tell…it sometimes starts to boot then shuts down again…sometimes wont boot at all…sometimes I get one long, two short beeps and it wont boot…searched for beep code info… gives three causes…System board failure; Video adapter problem; LCD assembly failure

I wait a while then I’m able to reboot.

Have down loaded mobile meter and the graph fluctuates between 50 up to 79 whilst surfing and even when idle between 50 and 59 continuous movement.

Have downloaded PC Doctor but can’t see how I can use it to run the full test because laptop keeps shutting down.

Any suggestion on where to start…the laptop is completely unmarked and keyboard still looks new…lovely screen no dead pixels etc so I still want to keep it for surfing…usually runs beautifully and it may sound silly but it’d be like parting with an old friend after all this time.

It sounds like a strange problem, but I am guessing that the CPU is overheating. The computer will not boot back up until the CPU has cooled down to a safe level. I was working on a friend's A21m and it had this problem. I really didn't know what was wrong. Alphakilo470 then worked on it and found the CPU was overheating, put on some new thermal paste and it worked fine. Alphakilo470 should be able to instruct you on how to apply new thermal paste on you CPU is this is the problem.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I know i'm a long time getting back to this but don't have many spare hours.

Stargate the laptop eventually wouldn't boot so on searching it seemed the problem may have been the CPU...bought a new one...fitted it...not so difficult because i had all the advice from posts on here...longest time was spent trying to re-connect the CMOS battery...tucked away in the most inaccessible place.

Anyway...same problem...wont boot...only this time all the lights flash then only the power light stays on...no beeps...nothing....completely dead...so i expect the system board is the problem.
