Maximizing battery life by disabling hardware components????

#1 Post by fefrie » Thu Feb 08, 2007 11:57 pm

Wondering if i do things like disabling the modem, ethernet connection, Infarred, pcmcia slots, com ports, parallel ports, if that will help reduce the power consumption, in addition to dimming the display?

I usually disable the ethernet and IrDA in the BIOS. In Windows disable the PCMCIA, LPT1, Modem. I think it could save a few watts, for example the IrDA, if you take a closer look on the LED it suddenly flashes (when enabled). Is minimal the power consumption gain but something is something

Agreed. If you don't need the optical drive, remove it too (which can also reduce the laptop's weight by about 0.45 lbs).

I'd run around without the dvd drive, but I use it, but taking it out reduced the structural integrity a lot.

You can replace it with a travel bezel, or just use the green arrow in the system tray to "safely remove" it but leave the drive in the bay.
