My T23 and the extra ram I purchased (2x512MB) arrived at my house. I had my wife unbox and QA the system. She said it looks great, screen is in good shape, and cosmetically it is very good. She has boxed it up and it is now on its way over here to southern Iraq.

I'll let you know when I receive it and takes some pics as well.

I figured the post was more than capable of standing on its own. It communicates the fact that I have purchased a T23 and extra ram, that it was shipped to my home, and that my wife is shipping it to me in Iraq. I guess expressing excitement over the anticipated receipt of a new (to me) Thinkpad is reserved for those with detailed histories well documented and known by all on this forum??

I think that Gerbil misinterpreted as I did initially. The post looks like a PM that was posted as a thread, instead as a PM.

Some people to hit the wrong buttons, myself included....though normally "Quote" instead of "Edit".

Even though I've owned about 40 laptops, acquisition of a new laptop is still a thrilling experience, especially when it's very different from what I've used before, e.g my first widescreen (Dell Inspiron 700m), my first sub-3lb notebook (TP240), and my first laptop with WUXGA res (Dell Inspiron 6000).

My first WUXGA was a Dell Inspiron 8600. AFAIC, WUXGA (and UXGA for non-widescreen) is the perfect resolution for a laptop. This has been my biggest disappointment with the Apple laptops. If they don't address this with higher-density screens in the next year or so, I will be seriously considering a Thinkpad to replace my current MacBook.

I shouldn't talk... I have a 17" iMac but it's sitting on a table idle at the moment. About the only use it sees is for hooking up my daugther's iPod nano. One of these days I'll get around to putting it to some good use, like video editing.

Hope your T23 gets to you in one piece.

I few years ago, I switched the entire family over from Linux workstations to Mac's. I always try to keep at least one Mac system around for me (currrently the MacBook). But I am pretty sure my next new (or new-ish) laptop will be a thinkpad. I haven't played around with the iMac that much. I use Solaris 8 at work and I have a Sun Ultra 5 online at home (with an Ultra 10 waiting to take its place). Used exclusively by telneting in (the Sun is headless but I do have a KVM when absolutely needed), I edit my programs and compile them with gcc (I'm a test engineer and the testers we use are hooked up to Suns). If I've counted right, there's 21 or 22 fully functional systems (2 600Es, 6 600Xs and the remaining ones are T23s), with the remaining 4 or 5 that still have some "issues". ! I have sold three systems and have been planning to off some others. I'm addicted to eBay and am a sucker for T23s with built-in wireless and/or SXGA+ displays. So I snipe systems that have problems and spend my time fixing them with the goal of eventually selling them. Anyway, that's what I keep telling the wife

! The daughter still at home uses a 600X, the daughter down in LA has two T23s (main and backup), there's a couple here at home for use by my daughter's friends when they come over (600X and T23), I normally use a favorite T23 (2647-HNU) and the rest are in hibernation.

I've got an Ultra5 at home that I got new in 2000. Definitely getting long in the tooth now...but I can't bare to get rid of it.

I spent several years as a UNIX admin; primarily Solaris, but also HP-UX, UNICOS, AIX, and Linux. Now days I primarily work in the IT security arena.

A few years ago, I threw away a ton of computer equipment that I had accumulated. We were getting ready to sell the house and buy another and I just got tired of all the clutter. Of course, now I have a much larger home, more storage space, and more money. So maybe I'll revert back.

I hope you didn't spend too much for it. Mine came by way of a "we sell your stuff" seller on eBay. U5 with 512MB of memory, dual 60GB hard drives and an external CD-RW burner. A couple of months ago we needed to replace a U5 at work. We found one on craigslist a few miles away. Almost brand new, in great shape. Had 512MB in it, a 360Mhz processor and a small disk drive. $50.

That's not the bad part... Brought it to work. Unhooked the old system. Hooked up the new one. Threw the power switch. "POP". WTF??!?! 5 seconds later I remembered that the tester's workstation area is wired for 220VAC. The power supply on the Sun was set at 110VAC (naturally). Went out and found another one for $65 (which I paid for out of my pocket).

Now there's BIG Dymo labels all around the power strip and on the back side of the desk, "CAUTION 220V".

I paid exactly $0 for it. Employer got it for me and then by the time I left the company, it wasn't worth it to them to take it back (EOL and all)...so it became a cheap "going away" gift.

They can definitely be had for next to nothing now days.

Yeah Ray, I believe that PianoWizard was indicating the number of laptops owned over his lifetime.

My current "working" Thinkpad inventory, as seen in this pic, is at 19, plus the PDA. I have numerous shells and parts lying around, as well as several non-Thinkpads....probably 8. As for laptops over a lifetime....I would even really be able to guess, because I bought so many at one point for resale, but maybe as far as the ones that I bought with the intentions of keeping....75-100....but most of them ended up being sold to someone that was in a hurry to get one.

T23 has been unboxed and it in full use. Fresh install of Ubuntu 6.10 and all is fine. The laptop is in near-new shape. Some minor wear on the keys and I could use a new trackpoint.

Everything seems to work right out of the gate with the Ubuntu install. Very impressed. Power management, keyboard volume buttons, wireless (pcmcia card), etc.

Upgraded to 1GB right away...didn't even power it up with the 256MB, so don't know how much of a diff it made. I have a 256MB module available...although I'll see if someone local can use it as well. (PM me if you are desperate for one).

Very happy so far.

The battery is pretty much worthless...but that's about the only real flaw I've noticed so far.

And the keyboard...It's almost as good as the one on my MacBook. <duck>
