T30 DIMM Slot 2 problem

#1 Post by dmac » Sun Feb 11, 2007 2:45 pm

I have a T30 (2366-86U) with 2 x 256 Mb DIMM memory sticks. It has been working fine for about 3 years.

It was working just fine until recently. When I booted up I had only 256 Meg of memory. I ordered 2 x 512 Mb memory from Lenovo thinking that I could get 1 gig of memory in all (discarding the 256 Meg sticks, of course).

When I installed the new DIMMs from Lenovo, I could see only one (ie, 512 Mb memory working). I swapped them: still 512. I put in 256 in slot 1 and 512 in slot 2: 256 Mb working. I swapped them, and I get 512 working.

It seems that my second DIMM slot has stopped working. Whatever I put in there doesn't appear when I reboot; whatever DIMM is in slot 1 works. I can't see any dirt, dust, or broken leads. Is there anything I can do to find out what's wrong and fix it myself?

Suggestions welcome. Thank iyou.
