T30 mobo, what is this chip for?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Tue Feb 13, 2007 4:46 am

I'm awaiting a new motherboard for my T30, it's the assembly 2 without security chip, 26P8422/91P7211
See this picture: http://i6.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/89/fb/9830_1.JPG

What is the blue plastic/chip for, underneath where the hard disk goes?
I don't have that on my 26P8423/91P7212 (assy2 with sec-chip).

Can you take a closer picture of the blue chip, once the system board arrives?

Thanks for the explanation.
I'll post a 'close-up' by the end of the week.
Mobo should arrive Thu or Fri.

Like danage said, it looks like a piece of filler to keep the hard drive away from the main board.

Got my new T30 mobo today.
That piece of blue above the sound I/O is just a strip of blue soft rubber, glued onto the mobo, presumably to keep the HD from rattling or for dampening the noise of the HD, which sits right on top of it (once installed).
I did not notice any difference from the previous mobo without that strip. The current HD is a Toshiba 40GB 5400rpm, not exactly quiet.
I'll replace it with a Seagate Momentus next.

Exchanging the mobo was a doddle, it's a real pleasure working on these Thinkpads!
I wasted money though on an extra (used) LCD-screen. As it turned out, there was nothing wrong with the original screen! I'll keep it for the time being, just in case.
