Installing new hard drive (Data) in ultrabay HDD Adapter.

#1 Post by winslow » Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:57 pm

Just received my genuine HDD adapter for my ultrabay 2000 Drive. Intend on putting in a brand new Hitachi drive for Data/ backup. Can someone who has experience with this walk me through step by step. I know I need to initialize and format the drive but I would like someone to walk me through. I tried earlier (with a generic 3rd party adapter and a different drive) but couldn't get the drive formatted properly. I was wondering if the problem was the 3rd party imitation adapter so I bought an original. Just want to make sure I do it properly. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Am I correct in assuming that there are no drivers needed for the adapter? I noticed that it comes with a floppy when it is purchased through IBM/ Lenova?

If I put my old hard drive in the HDD adapter in the ultrabay 2000 slot, will I be able to read the data on the disk if it is still a bootable disk? If not how do I retreive the data on it without reformatting it (and losing the data on it)?

Hope this gets to you in time...

I would NOT put a bootable hard drive into an Ultrabay adapter and still keep your regular (bootable) drive installed. Strange things have been known to happen and you may end up with TWO un-bootable drives.

If you install a new/un-formatted drive into the Ultrabay adapter, you can use Windows to format the drive. Assuming you are using Windows XP and you have already installed the Ultrabay adapter, boot Windows and follow the directions from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

As always when fooling around with disk format and partitioning, be sure you have a backup of your system drive or proceed with caution.

As far as needing any drivers, I have not ever seen Windows ask for them when recognizing the "new" drive. Nor have I ever used the floppy that comes with the Ultrabay adapter.

you can have two bootable drives with no pb at all, once you edit the boot.ini on both drives.

I don't want two bootable drives, I just want to retreive data on the old bootable drive. Is it possible to retreive the files from the drive without booting it?

Yes. Since UB2000 is hot swappable, boot into windows normally, without the UB2000 drive out of the computer. Once you are in Windows, insert the drive, wait for Windows to install and mount the drive, then go to my computer and access your old hard drive. Copy and paste what you want to the new drive. This should work for both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. If you are using Windows 98, you will have to have the drive in the computer before the computer boots. Since you have not modified the boot.ini file, it should boot off the internal drive. If you are using Win2000/XP, use the first method since less can go wrong.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Put the old drive in the genuine IBM HDD adapter and it worked perfectly. (I originally tried a 3rd party adapter and the drive couldn't be read). Guess I didn't save any money by purchasing that cheap adapter after all.
