Scrapping the T30
Scrapping the T30
So my T30 has died off this last week (video and memory problems) and I was wondering whether I can use the 1.8ghz P4-M chip to build up a media pc. I'm specifically looking at this board:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/ ... hp?UID=683
It mentions compatibility with the 400mhz fsb Northwood P4's down to 2.0ghz. Doesn't mention anything specifically about P4-M cpus though.
Any suggestions as to whether or not this will work?

I am leaning towards that it won't work. I think there needs to be something in the BIOS to make the P4 m chips work properly. That motherboard was designed for desktop chips, not the laptop chips, so the sockets are bound to be different. You probably can find the chip you need fairly cheap. The prices on Pentium 4's are dropping like a rock right now.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

If you are going to send your T30 to the 'breakers-yard in the sky', could I perhaps get the hinge-lid + spring that covers the PCMCIA slot?
Here's a mobo that will take your CPU: http://www.ibt.ca/v2/items/mb850/index.html

hey realblackstuff, give me a little bit of time to sort everything out first, and I'll send that hinge/spring in an envelope. D'you just need that piece of plastic, or anything else from that assembly? PM me your address.realblackstuff wrote:If you are going to send your T30 to the 'breakers-yard in the sky', could I perhaps get the hinge-lid + spring that covers the PCMCIA slot?

I think I'll try out a pin mod on the chip and see what happens. I'd rather just build up a new box from spare parts sitting in the closet. Thanks for the responses.
That ITX board would make a good media pc setup, put a gig mem, add a low profile tuner card, laptop hard drive, put it in almost any kind of case you can imagine, like a remote controlled car body for example, and go with it.
I've used them in humidors, jewelry cases, ammo boxes, etc. Their size makes them very handy especially if people don't want them to look like a computer.
Run either windows media center or fedoracore plus mythtv.
