Welcome to thinkpads.com!
Most likely cause of your display problem is a loose or broken LCD cable. This thin ribbon cable plugs into the motherboard and is routed up the back side of the LCD panel and plugs into a very thin connector. The plug on either end of the ribbon cable could be loose OR there could be a crimp or tear in the cable which causes you to lose the screen.
The problem can affect either the video signals (which would lead you to see an all-white screen) or the inverter board (no light issuing from the screen but you can still see pixel activity if you shine a bright light on the LCD panel).
The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) can help you disassemble the laptop:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... UYM3F.html
and you can usually get replacement ribbon cable from eBay or here in the Marketplace forum. There are several different cables for the T21, depending upon the type and size LCD screen you have. Refer to pages 157-159 in the HMM.
