PS/2 port doesn't work ...

#1 Post by MUCIAS1983 » Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:59 pm

Maybe someone can help me. My ps/2 port on my T23 doesnt work. Any keyboard or mouse i plug to it doesnt work. I've checked that keyboard and mouse on my desktop and they work so they're not the cause... my friend told me that it sometimes happens when irda is on so I disabled it in BIOS but without any result. I tried also changing KEYBOARD/MOUSE options in BIOS but it didn't help. Maybe this ps2 is dead but if you have any ideas ...:)

I have had various issues with my scrolling mouse plugged into the PS2 port (on a T22), but I think I have them settled now. I have had to disable the Trackpoint option in Thinkpad Configuration and make sure that mouse in enabled. If Trackpoint is enabled on that screen my mouse does not operate. Also, do you have the latest driver software installed on the T23 for the mouse? Good luck

Oh you know I did not see that you also plugged in a keyboard, sorry, my suggestion may not be valid.

It didn't help. This doesn't seem to be a software/driver problem because windows doesn't even see anything connected to this port...i won't use this port anyway but i like my computer fully operational :) so if you have any other suggestions...

A solution might be to borrow a port replicator or a docking station (type 2631), and see if the ports work there.
These can alo be obtained quite cheap on eBay, if you want one.

I assume you know that you have to attach a PS/2 mouse or keyboard already BEFORE you boot the laptop?
They are not hot-pluggable like USB.

I have not found any Windows/DOS PS/2 port testing software, but it's possible under Linux.

My understanding is that the PS/2 port on the backside of the T23 is a mouse-only port, unless you use a "Y-connector" for the keyboard.

As for the port replicator, the FRU 02K8668 has two PS/2 connectors, dedicated to the mouse and the keyboard.

Anyway if I plug just mouse it still doesnt work. I tried it just with mouse and I checked it with all combinations in bios or thinkpad configuration with Trackpoint set Enabled/Disabled/AutoDisabled and it never worked...and I know they are not hot-pluggable like USB :D...

One last ditch attempt, I had to mess around a few times with un-installing my mouse software (if you have any installed?) and I un-installed the software and unplugged the mouse and powered down. Then I plugged in the mouse, booted and used Install New Hardware wizard in Windows (even though it popped up a screen that it found the new hardware) and it asked to install the software, which I did not have; so it went out onto the microsoft website and downloaded the newest vers of the mouse software - and finally my little optical mouse works. I don't use it anymore, but I also own the port replicator and it does have a separate port for mouse and keyboard as Ray said.

Good luck

That's also not the problem beacause windows doesn't see this mouse , it doesn't show the screen that it found the new hardware, this mouse is not shown in Control Panel/System Device Manager tab and I cannot install it manually by any means ... i guess this port is dead but thanks for all the suggestions :).

You can always try if a USB mouse works (or a PS/2 mouse with a USB adapter).
If you need extra USB ports, get a PCMCIA USB2.0-card with 2 ports, preferably one with a NEC chipset, they seem to be more stable.

Might I suggest plugging in the PS/2 mouse while the computer is off, and then starting up? I know that that has been my problem in the past, and doing that has solved it.

Hope this helps!

Edit: Oops, just read back alittle, and seems that that has already been discussed. Make sure the plug is in FIRMLY. The adapter I was using was a bit loose, and after jiggling around a bit, it started to work.
