Just want to upgrade to XP! Have T22 w/ 98SE
Hi!
Wow! There is so much information to look through! All I want to do is upgrade to XP, get virus, firewall and spyware protection the easiest way possible for a T22. Have 98SE now. Just need instructions and recommendations for best software to do this quickly and easily. I've never done this before and I want to be as thorough as possible so l also need to know any troubleshooting tips in case of trouble. Should I buy from Ebay?
Anyone else doing this now and having trouble or can give tips is appreciated!
Thanks,
Rikki
PS The Sonic RecordNow is great. Thanks for all the suggestions!

First you need to decide whether you want Windows XP Home or Professional. This page may help you decide. Most people prefer XP Pro, but it's costs more.
Second, Windows XP is still fairly expensive. I recommend considering upgrading to a T23 which already has a Certificate of Authenticity sticker for Windows XP Pro, which allows you to legally use IBM's Win XP recovery discs to install Windows on the machine. Many members on this site would be willing to sell you a copy of those discs for several bucks. A very nice T23 can be had for well under $250. Buy one and sell your T22 for $180. The T23 is faster, has two USB ports, and can be upgraded to 1GB of RAM.
Third, whether you decide to stick with your T22 or upgrade to a T23, make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM. XP requires much more RAM than Win 98SE.
Fourth, I recommend AVG Free virus scanner.

Take PW advice, though I tried I can't disagree with any of his points.
For spyware look to MS Defender, or Adaware, or Spybot. All free, all work well.

whatever verison of XP that you choose, Pro or Home. they are reletivly easy to upgrade from 98se. just make sure that you backup everything before you do the upgrade, when doing anything drastic to your system, such as upgrading the OS, always backup. i had to learn this the bad way, although it was not learnt on my lovely thinkpad.
Also, allow yourself enough time. many a OS install have been messed up becuase of impatience. if you have any problems, consult the forum, everyone hereis really helpful, in my experiance and trust me i have needed their help, hehehe!
GOOD LUCK

Only minor problem with going with the T23... you are still going to get USB 1.1 with it. Yes, there are two USB jacks, but I'd think twice before considering plugging an external hard drive into the built-in USB. If you get a PCMCIA-to-USB adapter, then that problem goes away.

But having two is much better than just one, for example one can be used for plugging in an external mouse, and the other for a flash drive.rkawakami wrote:Only minor problem with going with the T23... you are still going to get USB 1.1 with it. Yes, there are two USB jacks

Yes, I know well the bummer of one USB port; I got a USB mouse that came with a PS2 adapter, thank goodness. I have a 6" USB extension cable that came with my SanDisk card reader which I leave plugged into my one "hot property" USB port, and am constantly switching between printer, card reader and Axim docking cradle
The extension just makes it easier for me to do this juggling act.
IBM T23 (2648-4NU) 1.13Ghz Pentium III, 1GB, 60GB 5400rpm, CD/DVD-RW, Internal Wireless, Windows XP Pro SP2 [DONOR]
Does it have a PCMCIA slot ? I was wandering around J&R music world the other day and noticed a PCMCIA card with two USB and one firewire for $29. I have also seen 1 > 2 pigtail USB, plug it into the single usb port and you get 2 on a 3" pigtail out. Just some thoughts.
I alway try to go that extra mile at work, problem is the boss always finds me and brings me back

winxp
I personaly cannot stand XP, I have a t21 with 384Mb Ram and 800Mhz CPU, I installed XP, and after about a couple of months it got really sluggish, same on my main computer too, also I have a Brother multifunction printer, when installed on windows 2000 the scanning to PDF documents was clear and the default resolution was 600dpi, I put winxp on and it looked crapped, the default resolution was 300dpi, It did not matter how I adjusted the settings the documetents looked aweful.
The new vista is a basically a fancy service pack to fix all the mistakes winxp has, only you need a gig of ram just to install it!
MY Point? I am still a bit of a die hard Windows 2000 fan, it is a lot lighter than XP and in my opinion better security, and maybe a better option for your laptop.
EDIT:
For firewall, I use sygate personal firewall (you can still find places to download it as it was free)
For antivirus, I use Avast, small light simple and very trustworthy.

I have a LC Power external 2.5'' rack and 7K60 was in it. I had absolutely no problems using this with my T23 - the USB cable has two ports - one for juice (Vdd), and the other one for DATA&juice.
I have to disagree that win2000 is a better option - I used both on variety of systems, and I have to say XP pro runs much faster on slower systems - win2000 tends to slowdown a lot if you install a bunch of programs, while XP slows down a lot less...

Me too. Except for really really slow computers, such as 200MHz/128MB/4200rpm, XP is faster than 2K. furiousmonkey, are you sure you weren't just bogged down by spyware, viruses, and/or the HDD getting fragmented?jimmy274 wrote:I have to disagree that win2000 is a better option
But either 2K or XP would be much better than 98SE, which is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Nope when I installed XP, (Now I use home edition) I defragged and after each program installed I defragged, then I run spybot, not to be mistaken for spywarebot. I defrag every couple of days and purely business orientated, no games or silly programs, I just dont like XP.
Maybe if there was some advantages to Pro from home I would appreciate the input. thanks.

The only problem I encountered with XP is the fact that everything you install turns out to be fragmented - even the Windows itself. Seriously, after you install XP and run Defrag, it will tell you that system needs defragmenting (as you will notice yourself...).
The home is just a basic version of XP that I don't like - I've used it a long time ago, and I don't remember as much, but something is just not right with that version. Plus it has a much less capable networking...
I don't see why don't you like XP - you could strip it to the level of W2K, and you don't need as much Service Packs for it to run smooth. As I can recall, W2K is a lot more buggy, but it always seemed to me that it's more stable... Dunno why...

I have been running XP Pro without a problem. It runs very fast on my computers and offers better compatibly and better ease of use than Windows 2000 does. I have run XP on an old Pentium II desktop and 600E, but if those older machines are not going to be used much, I'll put 2000 on it. If the computer has a Pentium III and a minimum 256MB of RAM, I'll use XP.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
ThinkPad T450s, Core i7 5600u, 12GB RAM, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD.
Previous ThinkPads: T41, T21, 600E

The main glaring difference between home and pro is domain and networking. Home can't 'join' a domain, it can join a workgroup but if you are running strict microsoft this could be an issue especially if dealing with exchange and such. There is some other stuff but I don't really remember it, that was over 3 years ago, I just go with Pro. There may be workarounds for this but I've not got the time for it similar to the old registery changes to change win2kpro into win2k server. Any systems I order for the normal workers gets pro. We have two developers starting in two weeks so I'm ordering three tadpole vipers running solaris for them [technically ones a spare BUT it will be in my supply room]....

So if I can't upgrade to a better laptop right away.........
So if I can't upgrade to a better laptop right away, Win 2000 is an option? Didn't think of that. Also getting error messages down loading suggested anti-virus and firewall etc. Takes forever and then says that there is a problem. Anyone else finding this a hassel?

If you're not going to buy a new computer, you can get an OEM copy of XP Pro at a pretty reasonable price. I have XP Home on one of my computers, it's worth the extra few bucks for XP Pro.
