Removing scuffs from T23 rubberized casing?

#1 Post by Kaervak » Wed Mar 07, 2007 3:03 pm

My T23 has quite a few scuffs on the rubberized screen lid casing, spent most of it's life as a corporate owned laptop. I'm not really bothered by them, but if there is something that can remove/reduce them, I'm up for at least trying. Thanks guys.

Clean the lid with some household cleaning agent. It will get rid of the dirt inside of those scratches and make them less noticeable. You cannot remove the scruffs, but can make them look better.

Yeap! Stargate199 is absolutely right! However, to make look more fine and smooth after the cleaning detergent, use a piece of leather (deer skin preferable) to wipe off the remaining.
That's just one of my suggestions. I hope I don't offend any animals right institution here....

I've already given all the plastics a good cleaning when I got the laptop. So no dice there, kinda figured I was stuck with them. Oh well, it's not that big a deal. Adds to the "can take a beating and still keep running" reputation of Thinkpads. Thanks for the suggestions though. :)

I dont know about all that, I guess there are a million different things you could try, including stickers shoe polish, wax, car scratch remover.

Or you could just leave it, and like you said, let people know that these are machines that can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. however if your harddrives ticking, time to replace it!

Hi
I had the same problem on my T23, finally what really worked for me was the use of Mr. Clean Magic eraser. I used it damp and it removed all scuffs etc. including some sticker residue.

Another strong endorsement for the Magic Eraser!

Whatever level of cleanliness possible on an old Thinkpad will be achieved with a brisk application of a dampened eraser followed by a polishing with a 3M microfiber cloth. Leaves a clean, matte appearance finish.

For those who might prefer a slightly more glossy finish on a rubberized Thinkpad, there's Meguiar's tire finish. This is available in varying formulations that will leave your laptop anywhere from slightly glossy to a mirror finish.

I've been using Armor-All protectant for years on my ThinkPads, and it hasn't harmed one yet. No odor after a day or so. They changed their packaging a few years ago -- the "Original Shine" is what you want for the low-gloss look of a ThinkPad. Does a good job of making the scrapes and scratches less noticable.

Nothing that won't dissipate in a few hours.

Tends to get sticky IME.

I've not seen that in the dozen or so ThinkPads I've used Armor-All on. Must be something else going on there. To the contrary, you have to be careful for a few days after applying it -- the cases are a bit slick compared to a new ThinkPad's rubbery feel.

Could be the fact that the only bottle of Armor-All I have is at least 25 years old!

Definitely feels "tacky" as it dries.

You may be able to find it under another brand name -- it's really a BASF product marketed by Proctor & Gamble:

You might also be able to find it under the Cleenpro brand in SE Asia.
