newbie help with dvd-rw bought of ebay

#1 Post by tiger24 » Sat Mar 10, 2007 9:31 am

Hi just signed up to this forum. I have a T30 and am running windows XP. I just purchase a dvd-rw drive off ebay thinking that i would beable to just remove the old drive and replace it with the new one. Unfortunately, when i did this the drive was not recognized at all by my OS. I can't find it when I try to install a new hardware device either. I contacted the company which i bought the drive from since the model was not given anywhere on the drive. But they thought i needed an application like Nero which i already have. Here is the same version of the drive which i bought on ebay

eBay link

I'm so frustrated with this drive and cause it said on the web page that it would be compatible with the T30 series.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Stephan

Hi Stephan, welcome :D

I just bought an original IBM CDRW/DVD drive from Ebay for $30 and yes all you do is insert it in the ultrabay slot and it should be recognized. The Nero software is for the actual burning process, but the drive should show up in My Computer as a drive. Does the drive show IBM on the lower left corner, I see the seller had his logo overlayed in the photo and I could not see it IBM was there. If not, perhaps it is not compatible with your T30. What were you running before in the optical drive slot? Sometimes it helps to use Safely Remove Hardware utility to remove your old drive, then shut down the computer. Put in your new drive then boot computer and see if it finds the new drive.

Thank you for you quick reply,

The drive does not have an IBM logo on it. I thought i would from the ebay website. My old drive is the stardard DVD/cd-rw combo. When i plug in the new drive it does not show up on my computer. I'm starting to get worried that I may have been taken by another bad ebay company. I will try what you recomended hopefully it will work.

Thanks again,

Stephan

This sounds like a lot of work but try taking out the new drive and restarting windows (Start-Turn Off Computer-Restart) with no drive in the optical drawer. After Windows boots, now shut down the computer (Start-Turn Off Computer-Turn Off), insert your new drive and boot computer. I see you have tried using Install New Hardware under Control Panel...

Bummer, hang around as there are a lot of knowledgeable people here; someone may have an answer for you. I've had my share of new drive problems too.

Good luck.

I just bought this same drive from the same people, they are in Mendham NJ. Stuck it in my T30, came right up and it also came with Nero OEM. They had it to me in 3 days. Maybe you just have a bad one. Mine is an NEC DVD burner.

Some more info may be required:

- What OS are you using? never mind, just saw it!
- What is the model number/manufacturer of the DVD drive?

I think I have dealt with that particular eBay seller in the past and did not have any problems (that I remember). It's possible that you got a DOA unit. I'd contact them and see what their "international" warranty is. They have stated this in the auction:
3-Months Replacement Warranty. 14-days Money Back Guarantee. (Does Not Apply for International Buyers).

my model is the T30 2366, 2 Ghz P4m, 768mb ram
i have no idea what model the drive is or the manufacturer which is extremely frustrating.

For Richp you got the same drive from SIB? Is the dvd burner dual layer too? cause i'm not sure if mine is even though they listed it as one.

Okay, let's try this another way...

Can you send me pictures of BOTH drives and include the top AND bottom of each? Use the email button on any one of my posts.

On all of the optical drives that I've see and bought off of eBay, there has always been some sort of identification label which states at least what model number it is. There should also be a manufacturer's logo, a manufacturing date, a serial number and usually a version/firmware code.

If the eBay seller has removed all such identification, then I would insist on a return.

Hi, you don't need to post them here, Ray was asking that you email the photos to him so he can see them. Just click on the button EMAIL at the bottom of Ray's post screen and attach your photos to the email to him.

Looking at the four pictures (CDRW/DVD top and bottom, and DVD-RW top and bottom), I see one thing that jumps out:

- the top of the DVD-RW does NOT have an IBM logo on it

It appears to be a fairly good copy of the genuine IBM label with all of the icons which indicate that it's fragile and to not push on the center section, etc. What is missing in the front left corner is the IBM logo. The CDRW/DVD drive has one, along with all of the regular FRU labels and manufacturer labels (Mitsubishi/Panasonic UJDA730). The DVD-RW drive shows NO labels anywhere and NO IBM logo. It appears to have "Made in China" (I'd guess, picture is a little blurry) in small text where the IBM logo normally goes.

I would insist on a return since:

- it appears to be DOA
- it is not a genuine IBM drive

Go to the top of this page and to the right of the photo of the Thinkpad, click on PROFILE and on the PROFILE page you will see the box email address - put your correct email address in there, then scroll to the bottom of that page and click SUBMIT.

The forum will automatically ban all free email address (yahoo, AOL, hotmail, gmail, etc.) because of the spam that can be sent from someone misusing these accounts. If that is your correct email address, then some sort of spam filter is rejected emails sent from the forum, therefore comes back as a bad email address. Make sure to unblock emails from here and that should fix it.

My DVD burner shows up as an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A, according to a couple of quick look ups it is a dual layer 8.5 drive, not that I have any dual layer blanks around to try it with yet. It does burn normal +R's just fine though with nero.

the nec will also burn -rs just fine too.
conversely if anyone orders a optical drive with non csel or similar
incompatable firmware it wont be detected simple as that
unless
a/one reflashed the drives firmware to swap over polarity settings
b/in rare cases one can solder certain ide pins to enable compatability.
or c/ return the drive for another brand thats good all good firmware support or proven to be csel compatable like nec 5xxx,6xxx,65xxx, types ,certain toshiba/samsung models from hp,dell computers.
