Thinkpad button and fn button?

Hi folks,

Recently purchased a T23 and was wondering what the thinkpad button does, when i press it nothing happens, same goes for the fn button no idea what it does.

Also the pc card slot on the left hand side what can you store on the card. and finally the three connections below the pc card slot, i know one of them is for headphones, what are the other two for?

The blue FN button is used in conjunction with the blue secondary buttons on the keyboard keys, example is to display to an external display you would push and hold FN then pick the key that has LCD/CRT on it or whatever yours has, might be icons. Hit selected key once while holding FN key down and LCD, hit it twice and LCD turns off and goes to external output, three times and you have both LCD and external. It can be used for a variety of purposes. If you go to Lenovos site you can download the manual for your laptop. I did that for my 'new' T30 and then printed it up, 88 pages, thank god I have a full duplex laser printer

As for the PCMCIA slots on the side, variety of cards area available, wired network, wireless network, USB2.0, USB/Firewire, memory cards, wide area network cards, etc.

Plugs, headset, mircophone, other one is stereo line in I think.

Welcome, and congratulations on your purchase. It sound like you got one, as is common, without anything on the drive (or perhaps without a drive).

As shipped (with appropriate software) the thinkpad button brings up the user's guide which answers all your questions. The Fn button doesn't do anything by itself. In combination with the f1-f12 keys you're able to do things like turn the monitor off, raise/lower screen brightness and hibernate.

"3 connections"--The other two are a line-in and a microphone jack. Off the top of my head I can't recall which is which.

"pc card"--You don't really "store" anything on the card. The slot is primarily used for expansion purposes. USB 2.0 cards, wireless cards, and attaching various devices (portable drive bay for example) that come with a PC card interface.

You may want to post a WTB in the marketplace here for the recovery CD's for your machine. There are a number of members here willing to provide copies for a nominal charge.

The recovery CD's will restore your machine to the state the software was in when it was new. Check on the sticker on the bottom of the machine. Just above the bar code you will find "Type 2647 (or 2648) - XXX" which is the particular model number.
