Mouse pointer wanders

#1 Post by brinxs » Tue Mar 13, 2007 5:07 pm

After i've used the trackpoint when i take my finger off it, it still keeps moving about the screen, any cures for this problem?

Hello, yes go into your Trackpoint tab on the mouse driver and adjust the sensitivity of the Track point, make it stiffer. (okay, no comments!)

And if that doesn't fix the problem, then you will need to replace the keyboard.

Note: some small drifting is normal after you "release" the trackpoint. It can move an inch (sorry, a couple of cm :) ) or so before it stops on its own. If it continues to move to the edge of the screen all of the time, then a keyboard swap is in order.

What it is doing is adjusting to the pressure of your finger. I noticed this a while ago....

Do an experiment: Start with your mouse on the bottom odf the screen, and slighty.....very slightly move it upwards. If it keeps going, them I'm wrong, but if it suddenly stops, then I haven't gone nuts.........yet. The button re-adjusts itself to the pressure you apply to it, so it will work normally. If i'm right, after you take your finger off, then it moves upwards again, and stops, to readjust to the lack of pressure.

I thought that i broke it too.......then i found that out. I think you can change an option somewhere, so that it stops doing it.....but I'm not sure

hope this helps!

If you leave your finger on the TP with very light pressure (but not so much as to move the cursor/pointer) the TP recalibrates itself to that as the new default position. When you then remove your finger it recalibrates itself again. The solution is to not rest your finger on the TP unless you actually want to move the cursor/pointer.

I agree with phelix. Also note that the trackpoint does *not* move. It is entirely rigid and cannot move, so any attempt to move it is usually excess pressure that has a tendency to defeat the calibration (personal experience and not necessary fact in this case). I use the lightest possible sensitivity in the settings, use light physical pressure, and keep my finger off the trackpoint unless I am actually moving it. I get very little drift now (I used to get a lot). ... JD Hurst

The TP works by strain gauges that measure the pressure on the rubber nipple.

If you're bored try this: apply just enough pressure to get the cursor to move very very slowly. You should find that the pointer moves perhaps 1-1.5 cm and then stops. Without removing your finger add some more pressure in the same direction until it again moves very slowly. Keep doing this several times until you've moved the cursor 5 cm or the boredom gets to you. You should be sensing that each time you're pushing just a little harder than the previous time. This is the TP's circuitry in action continuously recalibrating the "neutral" position. Then quickly remove your finger and watch the pointer jump back to where it was.
