T22 BoD, need to get data from hard drive

#1 Post by johnson0904 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 7:03 pm

I have a T22 that won't boot, when pressing the power switch, I get the usual hard drive flicker, then nothing. After reading most of the available advice, I checked the battery, the adapter, the CMOS battery, unhooked all of the add-in cards, memory, hard disk, etc with no resolution.

I am to the point of buying a replacement motherboard, but I actually would just be satisfied to retreive the data on the hard disk then move on to a newer model.

Could someone recommend a hard drive adapter that I could use to connect my T22 hard disk to another PC in order to extract the data?

Thanks,

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

You have two methods to connect your T22 hard drive to another computer:

- external USB hard drive enclosure which accepts laptop (2.5") drive
- laptop-to-desktop adapter (2.5" to 5.25")

A quick search using Google came up with this:

My preference would be the USB external housing as that will enable you to move the drive between any system that has a USB port. Getting one that supports USB 2.0 will be best for the quickest transfer speed.

I like Ray's idea of an external enclosure. When I was having power problems with my 21 and needed to get data off of the drive, that's what I got. I connected it to my desktop system and the drive popped right up in My Computer.

You can probably find a better price than I did if you buy online, but I was in a hurry. I went to my local Best Buy and bought an adaptec model ACS-120 for about $30. It supports USB 2.0 and doesn't require external power if the USB port you are attaching to has power. The enclosure has a plug for external power (5V) but it does not come with a power supply adapter.

Then, if you do junk the laptop, you have a nice backup drive already in a USB case.
