About the only sources of noise that I can think of that can come out of a T2x system would be:
- fan wearing out (sleeve or bearing problem)
- hard drive wearing out (bearings)
- optical drive (probably not what you are hearing)
- inductor and/or inverter noise (vibrating coil)
- defective sound system (speakers emitting sound when they shouldn't be)
The first three are easily replaceable. If you think that the fan has become noisy, it's a fairly easy job to replace it. Pop off the keyboard (several screws on the bottom), remove a couple of screws holding the heatsink/fan assembly and put a new one in. If you do this be sure to also re-apply some fresh thermal grease (after wiping off the old stuff). Of course, that could also be the source of your problem. If the heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink is not that efficient, the fan will be turning on more often. A fresh layer of thermal grease can help reduce the "on" time for the fan. Complete directions on removing pieces from the T22 can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:
HMM for T2x
If you are thinking about controlling the fan's turn on trip points then I'm not sure if the fan control utility that's elsewhere on this site will work with the T22. I've replaced a couple of T23 fans when they have started to wobble and groan with used ones from eBay.
By the way, can you please update your profile and enter your location? City/State is sufficient if you are in the U.S. or City/Country if outside. Thanks!
