T23 Won't stay on after changing fan

#1 Post by richvtws » Mon Mar 19, 2007 9:05 am

I was getting a fan error on bootup with the old t23 so I got an new one and installed it.... On initial boot it brought me to the bios setup where I had to change the date/time etc ... then botted right up only to shutoff immediately after windows finished loading ..... It did this repeatedly about 6 times everytime I turned it back on ..... I figured I would try a hard reset ... ( removed batt.. hold down power button) .. then reinstalled battery and tried to power up an now nothing ... even on AC ???

HELP :( ...
Thanks in advance,
Rich

Is the fan coming on when you turn it on? If not, you may have just left it unplugged or something... or maybe it's a bad fan.

I'm not too familiar with the insides of a T23, but if you had to remove the main board to get to the fan, you may have shorted it out somewhere along the way, but if it booted that far before turning off, it sounds more like a fan issue. Usually, with a shorted board, you either get nothing at all, or just a flicker of the power lights.

The new fan comes right on when I power up ... the battery is good as I'm able to get into the bios ocasionally before it shuts off and all the changed settings are still there... [censored] things just shuts off as soon as it finishes loading windows ... Just took everything back apart and put back together to make sure I didn't leave anything unplugged and it's doing the same exact thing

Anyone else have any ideas ??? I'm ready to toss it but it was working great before I changed the fan ...just was getting the fan error which I no longer get ??? Help :?
Thanks in advance,
Rich

A belated Welcome to thinkpads.com!

From your description is sounds like one of the thermal fuses on the motherboard is tripping and shutting down the laptop. I would try this (if you haven't already):

- remove all removable hardware (hard drive, Ultrabay, MiniPCI, ethernet, PCMCIA)
- if you have two memory modules, remove one of them
- turn the system on, let it sit and see if it still shuts off by itself

This sounds like a heating issue. Have you tried using any thermal paste, such as Arctic Silver?
