Erratic trackpoint

#1 Post by jeepcoma » Mon Mar 26, 2007 2:22 pm

I've had my T30 for about 5 years now, and it still works great except for one strange situation. After you turn it on, or resume from standby after a long while, the trackpoint will suddenly go flying around the screen in random directions of its own accord, moving very erratically, and occasionally double clicking, all of this lasting for about a minute or two. Then it will stop and work perfectly for as long as the computer is on until I turn it off again.

I have no idea what could be causing this. It is not OS related. If I disable the trackpoint in the BIOS, it doesn't happen, so I know it's only the trackpoint and not the touchpad. Is there any component on the MB I can test (capacitors, resistors, etc) that could have gone bad? Has anyone had this happen before? Any ideas?

if it is a hardware problem, then you have a good chance of just having to replace the keyboard. maybe it's even just the connector. what happens when you press the trackpoint while the cursor is "flying"?

I thought that too, but I really don't want to spend any money on it, and more importantly I'd like to know why this is happening, what can cause it? If I press on the trackpoint it will add my input to whatever erratic behavior is happening at the time.

I've had the keyboard replaced, but that was years ago. To be honest, I haven't used the computer in over a year. I gave it to my uncle and it went bad (dead harddrive). I sent in my T43p for a warranty repair, and they lost the computer, so I got around to fixing the T30, which is why I'm using it. I do remember it having this problem before I stopped using it, but I don't remember when it started or anything like that.

DHL lost it. It's being replaced by a T60p model 8744-C9U, but I first sent it in for the repair a month ago today. I saw my T30 lying there and had some free time, so I got it running again. Then I remembered this problem which I had before it crapped out.

Keyboards aren't that expensive on Ebay, about $25.-
That machine is well worth fixing for that price.
