T30 LCD Display is Very "Yellow"

#1 Post by coreman » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:48 am

My T30 display is very, very yellow...I've tried adjusting the colors with the ATI adapter controls but to no avail..it is still very very yellow.

Any suggestions? Could this be a problem with the backlight setting? Possible to change backlight to a "whiter" light?

Any help is greatly appreciated since I am back to using my T30 because my T41 decided to crash on recent business trip and is now in the ER being worked on...

Yes i believe that is because of the backlight, my mother in law 770Z has exactly the same issue, nothing not even a fresh install of XP fixed it.

It could also be damage to the LCD itself, from things like cigarette smoke.

I have picked up a few laptops from heavy smokers and have seen this problem...

Another possibility is that the screen was cleaned with the wrong kind(s) of solvent.

Sounds like the backlight or possibly the inverter are failing Replacing the backlight is very tricky and should be done in a clean environment. “Replacing the back light in most LCD panels requires you to disassemble the LCD panel”. Any dust that would get trapped in between the prism and LCD will show when in use. There are at least 3-4 other sheets of clear Mylar in between the prism and LCD.

“Caution” The backlight does contain mercury. The backlight is a small neon bulb and the inverter drives the backlight.

It could be a weak inverter. Inverters are easy to replace and inexpensive. If the inverter is good then it will more likely be the LCD.

“Caution” Be careful with the inverter it will burn holes in flesh. Know this one from experience. Make sure powered down when removing and replacing.

Inverter FRU# 26P8419
LCD FRU# 11P8297

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies...my guess it is either inverter or backlight since this is my personal machine and I've always used the proper cleaning procedures for LCD, old t-shirt moistened with warm water and I don't smoke...so that only leaves the backlight or the inverter since there doesn't seem to be a software setting that can be used to adjust the bulb temperature.

My engineering guess would be to go after the inverter first since that supplies the high voltage to the backlight and is easier to get at...in looking at the backlight (still in bezel), it looks yellow so I think it isn't getting enough voltage to fluoresce a "white light".

But again thanks for the responses and the part numbers. I'll probably let a local shop do the repair (after all I'm in Taiwan so it will be very reasonable labor charge)...
