backlight trouble?

#1 Post by jimmy274 » Tue Apr 03, 2007 1:43 pm

I was wondering what the red (pink) tint might look like on a worn out LCD panel. Mine works fine and has great brightness, but the screen (comparing to my Samsung 740n tft) is a bit yellowish or reddish (I can't tell) and up until now, I thought it's normal, when I saw the threads about backlight problems.
Sometimes, when the XP is starting up, it tends to flicker a little (just a bit - you really have to try to notice it). I was actually suspecting it's inverter, not backlight. Other than that it works fine.
Clues anyone?

If your backlight were going, you would see a pink color whenever you started the system or woke it up from sleep mode. It would go away after a few seconds, but eventually the bulb would die and your screen would go black. Your problem doen't sound like an issue with the bulb and more like an issue with color balance.

Well, it appears that it probably backlight - when I start my computer, or shut off lcd and then back on again, one portion of the screen is pinkish. After about a minute, everything is normal. Also, sometimes it flickers when started (just a little, but noticeable). I'm still not sure if it's inverter or the backlight that's causing this - when I tap the screen (on the plastic, not lcd directly) it flickers (1 tap = 1 flicker). Anyone?
I repeat - the brightness is fine...

The fact that it goes back to normal is indicative of a dying CCFL. Replacing it is pretty cheap, about $10. As I mentioned before, performing the operation is difficult but possible. If you're not very handy with taking things apart, I would recommend a new LCD.

That said, it is easier and cheaper than a new LCD to buy and install a new inverter and see what happens. What I would do:

1. Install a new inverter
2. If problem persists, purchase a new CCFL or a new LCD (depending on your skill level.)

Given your symptoms, it is the backlight. I wouldn't even bother with the inverter.

Now, having said that....your screen may still last for quite some time. I have seen screens with a pinkish screen at startup, last almost 2 years, before completely failing.
