clocking the motherbaord

#1 Post by larryb » Tue Apr 03, 2007 6:29 pm

Does anyone know how to reclock the motherboard on T20, T21?
I tried placing a 900Mhz cpu on a 700Mhz T20. At first the bios only recorded 700Mhz and all benchmark programs indicated 698 - 700Mhz cPu operation.

I then flashed the bios with a latest version and now the Bios will reconize the 900Mhz cpu but stil only operate at 700Mhz.

IBM spec's on the T20 motherboard was only for 700Mhz cpu's, and T21 motherboards for 750 - 850Mhz cpu speeds.

Does anyone know how to modify the motherboard to kick up the external clock to make the 900Mhz Cpu work on a T20 motherbaord?

I am NOT going to recommend this, but I will tell you that you will need to edit the BIOS to do such a thing. If I am correct the T20s use a Phoenix BIOS. You might be able to get this to work using the Phoenix BIOS editor (never seen it, only heard of it, probably can find it with a little time and Google). Still, you must remember, with this type of tuff it is EASY to kill equipment, and I don't mean that you pop in a BIOS savior and retry...

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Thanks for the reply.
I know about the problems with reclocking using the BIOS.

Since I can't find a schematic, I as hoping that maybe there was a simple jumper on the PPL circuit that would kick up the onboard osc to make the 900Mhz work.

Now i have read that the 1Ghz, SL53S will work on any T2x board at 1Ghz.

I have asked and posted to try to get a confirmation that it will work on a 700Mhz T20 mb before I purchase one.

Thanks for the info.

Where do I set up the speedstep. I didnt see it in the BIOS setup. I do have it set for MAX operation on AC connection.

Maybe I'm overlooking something

I dont want to seem like the dullest crayon in the box, but i got the bios figure out, but the thinkpad configuration thing is got me puzzled
:?

So you have it set for max performance in the BIOS, but then you go toThinkpad Configuration>Power Management>Intel Speedstep, and set it for max performance on AC.

Is that a windows xp program or a utility that I dont know where the heck it is
