T22 has screen problems

#1 Post by Davemci » Tue Apr 10, 2007 10:32 am

I just picked up a t22 from eBay for a mere $35.00. It was complete except missing the power supply. I had one so it wasn't a big deal. The t22 works great except for a screen issue. It isn't a backlight problem since the screen is always nice and bright. It's hard to explain but it intermittently looks like static. I get vertical lines of different colors and it looks like the color depth is changing. It works fine on an external monitor and if I run both an external monitor and the LCD it seems to clear up the problem. After it warms up for a few minutes the problem also goes away. It seems more like a loose connection or maybe an inverter problem. Anyone else ever had a similar trouble?

Check the video cable that connects to the back of the LCD. Make sure it is in tight. If that is ok, I'd replace the inverter. They run about $15 or so on E-bay. That was a great price for the T22!

If it's just a problem with a stable image on your LCD, then I would think it's something to do with your video ribbon cable, the LCD panel itself or an issue with your motherboard.

Ribbon cable:
- check BOTH ends - back of the LCD panel and on the motherboard; inspect it carefully along the entire length for rips or tears

LCD panel:
- if the ribbon cable checks out fine, try gently squezzing the edges of the LCD bezel or gently twisting the panel to see if your video problem shows up

Motherboard:
- my first attempt to locate the problem would be to gently push down on the video chip. Remove the keyboard and it should be the large 1" x 1" square part near the trackpoint butttons labeled "S3" and/or "Savage" (if my memory is correct). I generally power up the T2x systems with the keyboard already removed by using a port replicator's power button.

Thanks Ray and Highwayman,

The video problem went away after I cleaned the video connector and cable on the motherboard. It also gave me a chance to clean the fan and apply some new arctic silver. So, for a total investment of about $65.00 I have a great looking and working T22.
