DC jack from a T20/21/22 the same as a DC jack from a T23?

#1 Post by Kaervak » Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:00 pm

Title pretty much says it all. A T23 I recently picked up may need a new DC jack and on eBay the ones listed for the T20/21/22 are about half as much as the ones listed for a T23. I kinda doubt there's a difference but I want to be sure before I pick one up. Thanks guys.

According to the information in the HMM, the DC jack is listed in separate packages between the T20/21/22 and the T23. The individual part number is not referenced. I believe that the connector to the motherboard is different between the two. Don't know if the jack itself is any different. Unfortunately I have just put together a T21 (for the fourth or fifth time) and it's being checked out before delivery tomorrow. I've checked the pictures on eBay and they seem to agree with my memory of the DC jack in the T21 and what I remember from the one I sold out of a T23 a few months back.

As much as I have explored in the T2x series, I'm sorry I can't give you any more of a concrete answer other than to say get one that the seller says fits in a T23.

edit: I was wrong about the motherboard connector; they are the same, just the length of the wires to the jack are different.

From my experience with electronics, all you need to do is resolder the existing jack, provided the middle pin is not broken off. It can be a bit of a fiddle, but should not take too much time.

Thanks for the info guys. realblackstuff the DC jack on the T2x series is a bit different from some other Thinkpads. No soldering needed, just a snap in connector. :)

After doing some more searching on eBay and looking at pictures, the T20-22 DC jacks look exactly like the T23 jacks. Even found a few sellers listing the jacks as working with all T2x series laptops. So depending on if the T23 I'm waiting on actually needs a replacement jack, I'll be able to answer this mystery that's been plaguing mankind for years. :D

Ignorance is bliss...
Sorry 'bout that. I've taken most of my T23 apart, just not that port-strip with the DC connector.

There seems to be some difference between those jacks, look at the pics in these 2 ebay posts:
http://tinyurl.com/28mz5t and http://tinyurl.com/ywd5v2
Both claim to be T20/21/22/23 compatible

Here's something that I threw together because I had to take apart a T23 tonight:

When I get around to doing the same to a T21 and/or T22, then I will add those pictures.

Great idea, Ray. Could you perhaps add a frontal picture of the plug opening, to make things absolutely clear?

The pictures are a big help. The only unfortunate thing is the ones from eBay just arent large enough to make a correct decision. Ray, thanks for the really good quality pics of the T23 jack you took. Definite improvement. I'm going to do some more searching around and see if I can stumble upon any good quality pics of a T20-22 jack.

Did a bit more searching and found two sites that may be the best current answer we'll get.

http://www.impactcomputers.com/imp-59368.html
http://www.laptoprepairparts.com/html/d ... ory=dcjack

Neither one have pictures of the actual item, just generic stock photos. They do list them as being compatible across all T2x series laptops though. A little bit of help but still not the 100% we're after.

This question about the DC jack compatibility is interesting. If you can wait until tonight (Pacific time), possibly tomorrow morning, I'll open up the T22 that's been vexing me with the "Blink of Death" problem, extract the DC jack and see if it fits (physically and electrically) inside the T23. If there are any markings on it which may identify the maker, I'll try tracking down a cheaper source for a replacement. It will probably NOT come with the wiring harness/plug so some soldering would be required.

Take your time, the laptop hasn't even been delivered yet. And I'm not entirely sure it even needs a replacement jack. There are quite a few on eBay that are complete with wiring and all. :)

Okay, so I didn't take my tiime

Bottom line: If you are thinking about replacing a loose or broken DC power jack inside a T23 system, better make sure that the wires from the jack to the motherboard connector are at least 1 5/8" long. I have updated the site with pictures comparing T22 and T23 DC jacks side-by-side:

http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_t2x/dc_jack/

If the eBay/online seller says he has a T20/T21/T22/T23 DC jack, then most likely it came out of a T23 system and it should fit. To be safe, ask how long the wires are :) .

Also, I was not able to find any identifying marks on the jacks. A quick scan through Digikey.com and Mouser.com turned up no useful replacements. When I have more time I'll resume the search for a cheaper source for these power jacks.

edit: After looking at the jack for a minute under high magnification, I found a logo: HRS, all run together like this: Image

The maker is HIROSE. The same company that also makes the antenna connectors on the MiniPCI wireless cards and probably most every other interconnect inside the laptop. A search through the Hirose web site has turned up no matches. It may be that the part was obsoleted within the last few years (or I'm not looking in the right categories). Anyway, at least I know who makes (made) it. That should make tracking down a part number a little easier.
