T20 with VXD errors won't boot

#1 Post by acz » Sun Apr 15, 2007 4:09 am

My T20 (2647-44U) worked just fine for years, and was completely up-to-date with patches and updates from MS and IBM/Lenovo as of late 2006.
Somehow one or more system files got corrupted when my sister was using an external WiFi adapter. So, the first symptom was that it failed to boot into Windows because the VMM32.VXD file disappeared.

I looked around the web for guidance on how to rebuild that file by extracting individual VXD files from the CAB files in the c:\Windows\System\Options directory, and putting those into the C:\Windows\System\VMM32 directory.

Even after that, there are still about 15 VXD files and one VRTWD.386 file that are not found so it never boots into Windows. I have an old Win 98 emergency boot disk, and 3 old Norton Rescue disks, which get me to a good old DOS prompt, but they don't seem to be helpful beyond that.

Of course this machine is long out of warranty. The COA for Windows 98 Second Edition is still intact on the bottom, but I cannot find any recovery disks.

Can I still obtain a T20 recovery CD anywhere?
If not, is there another inexpensive way to proceed to restore this T20 to working order?

Can I still buy a retail XP SP2 installaton CD and overwrite the Win98 OS without losing any user data on the hard drive?

Any suggestions and pointers would be appreciated! Thanks.

T20 (2647-44U, needs a win98 install disk to rebuild vmm32.vxd)
T23 (2647-HNU, pulsing fan, won't boot)
T41p (2373-GEU, works perfectly)
T61 (7658-CTO, works perfectly)

You should be able to obtain a set of R&R disks in our Market Forum.
Since W98 is no longer a supported OS, you could also buy a used W98 or W98/SE (depending on your 'flavour') on e.g. eBay.
Make sure to get an OEM version.
You can also try to 'fix' the missing files by using the System File Checker SFC.
