T20 Ram Problem

#1 Post by aMadUrchin » Thu May 03, 2007 11:10 pm

Hi guys, been browsing the forum for a while but this is my first post.

I recently got a T20, I tried to upgrade the ram to 512MB, so I bought a stick of 512MB PC100 ram on NewEgg, but it won't boot from that.

Right now I have 1X256MB and 1X128MB sticks on here, but when I tried to put the 1X512MB into the laptop it just don't load up, it does turn on however since the CD will start to spin if there's one in there.

I tried to put 1X256MB and the 1X512MB in there later, this time it will boot and in the BIOS will show up as 768MB, but it will reboot continuesously without loading Windows.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Basic specs:
PIII 647MHz
30GB 4200RPM
Windows XP Pro
Currently 384MB RAM

My guess is that you are using the wrong ram. The T20 uses PC100 and PC133 ram...both need to be LOW DENSITY ram....16 chips, 8 on each side. You won't get a 512mb stick to work in a T20, because the limit is 512mb. (2x256mb)

So are you saying that I can't just have 1X512MB in there? I must split into 2 sticks of 256MB?

Thanks

Since you already had one stick of 256, you could just get one more 256MB and you'll have 512. That's what I did and it works fine.

Thanks for the replies, I managed to convince the csr at newegg to return it for me without charging the restocking fee

guess I'll just start to look for a 256mb ram stick

I'm pretty sure Newegg does not sell the type of 256MB sticks you need. I know Crucial does, but they're pretty expensive (somewhere around $70 each last time I checked). I got one of the 256MB sticks for my T20 off eBay for about $40 shipped, and the other I lucked out and got from a guy on Craigslist for $20.
