Cooling fan temperature switch on cpu or heatsink?
Cooling fan temperature switch on cpu or heatsink?
The reason I ask is that it seems my cpu runs at 55 at idle. Seems a bit high.
If the switch to turn on the cooling fan is 'determined' by the cpu, it would seem that the switch would turn on when the cpu deemed appropriate and temps would be nice and low.
I'm now starting to think that the 'turn on point' of the fan is determined by something within the heat sink itself. If there isn't sufficient thermal paste to transfer heat from the cpu to the heat sink then if the 'switch' is in the heat sink, insufficient heat transfer would cause the heat sink to be artificially low in comparison to the cpu. This would in turn cause a delay in the fan turning on.
Does anyone understand what I'm trying to get at? I'm confusing myself.
I guess I'll just reapply the thermal grease and find out what happens.

It's quite simple really. You MUST use thermal paste between CPU and cooler, properly applied.
Instructions: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=361385
If there is too much or not enough, the thermal sensor in the CPU area does not work properly.
There is a dedicated forum for the Fan Control program, that can be used: Thinkpad Utility Work Area

I guess that's what I was trying to figure out.
Are the temperature sensor and the fan control two seperate independant components?
If the cpu temp sensor is screaming 'Hot! Hot!' does it have the ability to turn on the fan control
Or
does it have to transfer heat to the heat sink where the heat sink says 'Hot! Hot!' and the heat sink turns on the fan control.
I'm just curious as to how the schematics work, but yes, I think that I will reapply some thermal paste to the cpu. I think a processor running at 60c at idle and web surfing is a little high

If you found the link in Bill's post, yes.
And we would not have posted it here if it would not work on a T23.
On a T23 it does not have the full functionality though, so read that forum.

What are you talkin' about? It reads the top 4 or 5 areas on the fan list, which most importantly is the CPU. The program can be made to turn the fan off, put it in bios mode, or set to any temp range you like.RealBlackStuff wrote:If you found the link in Bill's post, yes.

It works just as good on my T23 as it did on my T43.
