Boot up of T23 from T20 dhdd
Boot up of T23 from T20 dhdd
I have just bought a T23 with XP pro + ntfs on a 30gb HDD. It works fine.
I have a couple of T20s also. If I put the HDD from the T20 with XP installed it will not boot. I get a blue screen saying windows has encountered a serious error. Its the same in safe mode. But theres nothing wrong with booting this hdd with XP on the T20. I dont think it is a driver issue because it fails almost immediately and wont go into safe mode either. Conversely putting the T23 HDD in the T20 has the same result. It wont boot either.
I get the same STOP: 0x0000007B error.
Any ideas what this can be. The T20 hdd is fat32 with XP pro.
My other T20 has W98. This boots up ok in the T23. Also I dont think it is a disk or ide driver issue as MS suggest as putting the failing disk in the ultrabay enables me to see and use the disk.
I am not aware of any differences between these two models as far as the hdd is concerned.
As far as I can see using partition magic the disk geometry is the same on both machines. So what might it be that is preventing these two disks from booting in other machines.

It sounds like this may be the problem you described, but the solution doesn't sound easy.

RE:HD switching
I believe what you're encountering is part of Microsoft's attempt to prevent piracy. To prevent people from posting HD images online with XP pre-installed, they made it so windows would not work if the hardware config was too far different. In other words, you should be able to switch between t20s or t23s, but the t23 differs too much for you to be able to boot. If you try the same thing in 98 or Linux they are much more cooperative.
Hope this helps!

Your T20 XP hard drive would boot in a T21 and probably a T22 with out any issues (I have done this numerous times before)-but their are some hardware differences with the T23 that throw up a red flag with XP, not allowing it to boot up.
Now if you can get a hold of the T23 Windows XP recovery CD's, you can install it on any T2x series without any problems at all.

I lost count...
Thanks for the advice guys. Bad news really. With my W98 machines I can just swap the drives over and W98 just loads up the drivers it needs and carries on happily.
I will have to put one of the T20s drives in the ultrabay so that I can use it. Pity it wont boot though.
Meanwhile I have had to load XP afresh onto the T23.
Another day wasted - thanks Bill (Gates).

The reason the drive from your T20 won't work in the T23 is because the T23 uses a different motherboard chipset. With Windows 98, all the hardware was handled by DOS using some generic drivers during bootup. Since Windows XP, 2000 and NT don't have an underlying second OS like DOS, they have to provide their own drivers and if the computer doesn't have the driver, then it won't be able to boot. It's like trying to start a car with the wrong keys.
If you insert the T20 hard drive into your T23 and run a repair install of XP from the CD, then XP will re-install it's drivers and you'll be able to boot without reloading the OS totally (it just might not work on the T20 at this point).

I had this problem also trying to move a drive from a T21 to a T23, you will have to do a repair to get XP to fix itself. Long process but not everything will work quite correctly.
If you load a T23 with the recovery disks, you can use this drive in any T20, T21 or T22, XP will try to load new drivers when installed. Do this once and the drive can be swapped as often as you want.

Well I have just finished reinstalling XP on the T20 disk that I installed into my T23.
Tried a repair instal first - but it did not seem very happy so I did a fresh instal.
But I am still left with my original problem. The HDD wont boot in a T20. I would really like to be able to do this somehow. So when I read that using recovery CDs would enable me to swap disks my eyes lit up.
So ....... Can anyone let me have a T23 XP recovery cd ??

Where to begin......
390e x1 390X 390X,700mhz
1 x T20 + about 8 untested for spares
4 X T23 + 6 breaking for parts
1 X T23 with Samsung 840 SSD and XP Great combination !
AND NOW....3 X T60s and 3 x T61s

RE:Xp across pcs
There is always another option. If you can get a copy of the t23s os and the t20s os (just the windows folder) you should be able to get the os to give an option of which one to boot. This requires access to an extra hard drive and a way to switch stuff between though...

Thanks for the ideas truk. I have sort of tried this already (see below).
What I have ended up doing is - using partition magic - creating two bootable partitions on the HD. One for T20 the other for T23. I tried to get XP to become dual boot after this but it did not seem to want to boot from two XP partitions as well as a recovery console option.
So I use powerquests bootmagic to set the partition to boot from whenever I switch between tpads.
