Changed keyboard from T23 to T20, Now T20 LCD wont display.

#1 Post by sstudley » Sun Jul 01, 2007 9:34 am

Lost some keys to an old T20, had a T23 that quit showing signs of life.
Now I'm wondering if the T23 had a fixable problem.
First, the display worked on the t20 before changing the keyboard.
Now it only works thru the external monitor.
Using the Fn+F7 key only shows the ext monitor on 1 of the 3 key presses.
Did not test the t23 with an external monitor so don't know if it was working or not.
Would a different working keyboard fix such a problem is the question, is it really the keyboard doing this?

Hi and welcome to our forums.
All T2x keyboards should work on all T2x models.
Make sure it is properly connected. Press the 'Y'-key and both 'Shift' keys.
I don't know if there is a difference between the T20 and the T23 strip (with the Power button), that is mounted across at the top of your KB.

Also, make sure that the LCD connector, underneath where the keyboard plugs in, to make sure that it didn't work loose.

But it came from a unit that lost video and such, so I wonder if the video loss can be from something with the keyboard.
Might be dumb but it was working before I changed the keyboard now it aint.
The keyboard was all that was changed...

Will pull it and check the connector.
Did not notice it, hopefully that will fix the issue.

If you had a bad keyboard, then either you would not be able to turn on the keyboard since the power button is on it, or the BIOS would give a 301 error. Other then that, I'd say it is a bizarre coincidence. Make sure that the LCD cable running to the motherboard it fully seated, or reseat it and see what happens.

Just to illiminate it, have you tried putting the old keyboard back on?

Now it work sort of..

When you press the right front of the case it started to show display.
Now the ext monitor does not display but if I move the plugged in video cable the lcd works better.
If you hold your tongue in your cheek just right when you set it down it continues to work.
So still looking at a loose connection but in a different place now.

It seats the keyboard into the connectors.

This sounds like your motherboard is warped in some way or form. Try flexing the case to see if you can get something to come up. Push the right side of the palm rest up while pressing the leftside down and vise vera. This is a typical issue and any person who has used many T2x computer (*cough* Ray :D ) had come across this.

HEY! I was on my way home from San Francisco a little while ago and I thought I heard my name mentioned...

You may be looking at the classic case of a loose part on the motherboard. I still have a couple of T23 systems which do this (non-boot without some physical assistance). However, they require some manipulation of the front left corner of the system (below hard drive and PCMCIA slots), either the corner lifted slightly up or pushed slightly down with respect to the rest of the system. If you have the time and inclination you can remove the motherboard and do a close inspection on some of the parts and re-solder any suspect connections.
