My obsession for T23s with wireless or SXGA+

#1 Post by rkawakami » Sat Jul 07, 2007 4:11 am

Couldn't resist: Latest 'problem' T23. Only lasted 2 1/2 hours on eBay before I snapped it up. And it's ANOTHER system that has the crack in the front left corner! The keyboard doesn't look right (front edge is sticking up along with the trackpoint buttons and the space bar is tilted), which probably means that it's been opened up and not re-assembled correctly. Of course my hope is that it's something simple... and that the LCD is still good... and the disk drive...

Can anyone tell me what they think is in the bottom PCMCIA slot? I initially thought it might be a flash reader, but now I'm not so sure.

(Wow... Just checked my email and there was a message from the seller that came in about 20 minutes ago. They're up late too! I asked what the card is...)

It's too regular to be a card-reader.
My guess is a USB or combination USB/Firewire card, with a power-bus in the middle.

Looks more like a PCMCIA 56k modem possibly - the slots look way too small to be USB ports.

My guess is either a modem or LAN card, which is missing the dongle.

It's definitely either a network or modem card in the bottom slot.

For whatever reason, every single T2x keyboard I've used that was made in Thailand has had the blue mouse button slightly slanted to the right and a some noticeable flex and bounce on the left side of the keyboard. The T2x keyboards I've used that were made in China were always alot more solid and nicer to type on. I've only seen the Chinese made keyboards on T20s and T21s though.

Well, it's official...
eBay seller wrote:It's a network card but I don't have the dongles for it.
Which begs the question... why is it in there when almost every T23 should have had both ethernet and modem cards and specifically, the N16 had both of those AND wireless? Well, time will tell....

My guess - the internal network card failed and someone took the cheaper, easier route and just installed the network PC Card.

My T21 has the keyboard with the blue mouse button. The only time it sticks up like that is when I remove the bottom keyboard mounting screw. When properly secured, the 3 buttons sit nice and flat.

Ray, nice catch! The LCD and the lid took to be in decent condition and hopefully you can bring back another T23 from wherever thinkpads go when they die! :)

Well the system arrived today and I could only give it a couple of minutes inspection before getting back to some more important jobs. The mystery PC Card is an IBM 16/4 Token-Ring Cardbus Adapter, exactly like this one. FRU is 34L4809 and the P/N is 34L4899. I'm going to put it up in the Marketplace as I have no use for it.

When I get a few minutes later on this week, I'll detail the problems (and hopefully, the fix) with this unit. I've already got a good idea what it is... <rattle>... <rattle>....

"Loose" is such an inexact description... how about "detached". System is in line for minor surgery in a couple of days.

This one has both 1.2GHz CPU and wireless, and is fairly cheap.

Ah, yes. A 5NU with a small scratch on the LCD at $260 isn't such a bad deal.
