#1 Post by champsbear » Sun Jul 08, 2007 1:06 pm

I was having BSOD problems I thought it was my memory I have two 256 sticks in it I took one out and it worked fine for several hours then I got a BSOD I tried swapping out the memory sticks but all I get is error beeps telling me theres no memory installed I tried all different combinations and got the same result. Some advice would be much appreciated

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Memory issues can take a little while to pin down. It generally requires that you have a diagnostic program, such as memtest86+ or PC Doctor on a bootable media (floppy or CD). And some time...

The procedure is this:

- With only ONE stick of memory installed, boot the system and run whatever memory diagnostic you have. In the case of memtest86+, allow it to run until it has completed at least three total passes. For PC Doctor, you can either set up the number of passes (F2 menu - Set Pass Count) or simply re-run it three times.
- Assuming that the module passes in the slot it's in, move it to the opposite slot and repeat the memory tests.
- Assuming that this first module passes in BOTH slots, repeat the same thing for your second moudle.

If either a memory module is defective or you have a slot problem, this procedure should reveal that fact.

If your "good" stick (the one that doesn't give error beeps) passes a memory check and the BSODs still occur, it may be a problem as a result of the failed memory messing up one of windows' files. You can try to debug, but usually it's best to backup and reinstall windows at this point. Another thing you ought to do is try both slots with your memory test, the problem may be in the slot itself.

Hope this helps, good luck!

If you get the 1-3-3-1 beep sequence when that 128MB module is installed in either memory slot by itself, then I would say that it is defective or NOT a PC133 spec'ed module. What is the result of your testing with your original 256MB modules?

Not sure what the four short beeps would mean; it's not listed as a beep sequence in the maintenance manual as far as I can tell.

Well, if you can't get your system to boot reliably with ANY combination of modules in either slot, then yes, it sounds like there could be a problem with your motherboard. If at all possible, try your memory modules in another system which also requires/uses PC133 memory.
