T23 Power Issue, it doesn't turn on

#1 Post by Ophiuco » Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:10 pm

Hi friends,

A friend gave me a T23 as a gift, and it was perfect 1.2 gHz, 256 Mb, 40 Gb HDD, with windows xp pro. But when I was adding more ram (using 128 Gb from a T22, the laptop say one beep, and didn't turn anymore, also when I put the adapter (I try with two god adapters as the same spec.) the leds always are turn off. there isn't a sound or beep. I dissasemple a re-assemble piece by piece, but is the same. I tested all the pieces (dvd, HDD, Adapter, battery, LAN, in the T22 and works well.

Anybody can help me and give a good idea?

Thanks  :x

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

First off, if the 128MB memory module from the T22 is a PC100 version, it will not work in the T23, which requires PC133. If you still have the 128MB module in the system, remove it.

From your description it sounds like there is no power getting to the T23 (either battery or AC adapter). When you press the power button, is there ANY indication of life (flashing LED, beep, fan spinning, LCD backlight, HD spin-up, etc.)?

Hello,

Thank you for the fast answer, as said in my post when I plug into a/c, the leds always are turn off, and I don't hear anything. I know that the laptop doesn't receive energy, I try with a port replicator but it is the same, nothing happen. Yes I pull out the 128 Mb, I tried with and without original memory. No beeps, no sounds, no lights

Thanks

With that description, it could be a fuse or a component that has fallen off of the motherboard. Is there any rattling sound if you (carefully) tilt the system around?

There isn't a sound. Also I just disassemble and pull out the processor, I didn't find any loose or boken part. I think that the laptop has a damaged fuse, But I don't know how to probe it.

Thanks in advance

Hi

Is it possible that you have been running the machine on the battery ever since you got it ?
It could then be just a coincidence, that the battery went flad, at the time you were swapping memory modules.
You could try the T23 with the battery from the T22, or if the T22 does not have a good battery, you could charge the T23 battery in the T22.

The two batteries have a good charge I tried them in the t22 and work with 95 - 99% of charge.

The intention with my previus suggestion about the battery was NOT to have you test the conditions of the batteries.
The intention was to have you try to start the T23 on a known good battery.

I am only guessing here, but the case with your machine might be this:
it cannot run on the main adapter
it cannot charge the battery
it can run on the battery
