Looking for input. Help me pick between another T23 or a R40

#1 Post by braxx » Sat Jul 21, 2007 2:35 pm

Hello fellow TP owners. I have been a owner of a T23 for about 1.5yrs now. I really like the machine but sometimes I feel like I need to upgrade as I'm tired of the PCMCIA wifi and even the 1.1 USB. So, my thoughts were to modify my T23 and add a internal wifi card and also add a USB bluetooth device somewhere in the case and maybe run it from the ultra port.
Any how, after much thought I started to look around for a more advanced TP. I came accross a deal ( At least I think it's deal ) for this : "IBM Thinkpad R40 Centrino 1.4Ghz 15inch XGA TFT, 20GB HDD (with recovery partition) 512mb Ram, wireless.
These units DO NOT have a CD Drive you'll have to load software over a network or use an external USB CD or USB key.
I'm asking $175.00ea pickup $190.00ea deliverd.
They have the factory WinXP Pro preload so they are same as the day they came from IBM
."
The seller is local ( about 30 miles )and I trust him. He helped me out by fixing my current T23 about a year ago.
Do you guys think a R40 is a step up from a T23?
Pro's and con's of the R40 over a T23 ?

Thanks,
Josh

That's a very nice price for an R40! Does he have multiple ones he's selling? :)

The R40 will get you a better CPU (Pentium M rather than Pentium III-M), USB 2.0 and Firewire. It'll be heavier than the T23, but the difference depends on the specific models.

I agree with Tom that this R40 would make a nice upgrade. I also agree with him that the only downside is the weight. It's about 1.5 pounds heavier than the T23.

I think you should buy an R40. The specs are better, and your system will be faster. And you have better graphics card inside.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ThinkPad#Lenovo_UltraBay tells me that the R40 and T23 both use Ultrabay plus, so you can use your UltraBay Plus devices from your T23, in your R40 :D

(The advert says that the R40 doesn't have an CD/DVD drive, but if you swap it out of your T23, it has a CD/DVD drive 8) )

I'm just saying, $175? He could probably get $350.

A Pentium M based R40 in nice shape is an excellent machine. It's a modern laptop with the features mentioned above - long battery life, cool operating, USB 2.0, internal WiFi, etc.

I've owned a T22 and an R40. My T22 was heavier than my R40.

The R40 is bigger in size, but it is lighter than the T22.

At least mine was, there was a very clear difference.

I just talked to him via email. I asked if he still had 2 of them and he said yes. I'm gonna call him tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pick up 2 of them.

I'll let you guys know more after I get them. He is on this site and he owns or runs a company that sells off lease computers.
He is a local car nut and we are part of the same car club and he hooks the members of the car club up. I know he has or had a couple dozen of them.

Now I need to find buyers for my T23 and T22's

He sells them for $299 with the DVD drive and all of the other stuff I mentioned.

I have no desire to make a profit from his generosity to me.

I'll check them out and let you know what there like. Then if you guys are interested. I'll let him know.
