T20 Fan Woes :(

#1 Post by jamerslong » Wed Aug 15, 2007 2:31 am

so as we mostly know i bought a T20 off ebay and put in a 900 Mhz processor, i noticed that the Fan turns off after it POST's and does not turn back on, i cant find any software that works on the Thermal sensors for windows 98 (dont want to install Xp) so i dont know how hot the cpu gets.

so does anyone have suggestions? there is talk around the net that is may have something to do with drivers.
(TPfancontrol wont work)

When I had a T21, the fan wouldn't come on until 80C. Maybe that's why it hasn't turned on? Unless you've been stressing it at 100% for a long time.

Besides the fan test during POST on a T20 I would be very worried if the fan started during normal useage.

Since the heatsink/fan of the T20 was designed for 750MHz max, IMHO it's not a surprise that it runs constantly with a 900MHz. I did use it with a 800MHz processor, but once i swapped it for a T21 (or 22, i'm not sure) heatsink/fan, the operating temp went down a good 10C degrees.

Well, the computer overheats before the fan ever even comes on. i would figure that the computer would kick the fan on before it would turn itself off..... i am going to run to Radio shack later and get some arctic silver 5.

i would still like a way to get the fan to turn on, i will write some later :) something that is simply on and simply off... idk if i can do it for 98 though

i installed a drive with windows 2000 and it ran fine, i ran a temp monitor and it stayed around 64C running a movie at 700Mhz

i will try reinstalling windows98 on my primary drive i think there are probably conflicts from the previous laptops drivers

well, i formatted the drive and during setup the Fan is running. so i guess i was right. is there a way to alter the bios settings to turn the fan on at a lower Temp?

i went to buy some Arctic silver 5 at radio shack andthey were sold out... but it runs fine now :)

Sorry to bump this up but...

I have the same problem and I am running Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn. I have the fan spin at POST but won't after that. I have not tried installed a different OS but I did try a drive form my old 570 with XP Pro on it. The fan wouldn't spin up then but I was not monitoring the temperature then. What would be the temperature at which the fan comes on?

the fan kicks on at 80 C or when it runs 65C for extended periods as far as i understand it, the fan kicks on now that i have a T22 heatsink on it. and when it kicks on it blows hot air too. unlike my original heatsink which when it did kick on it blew cold air. ??

the CPU still gets pretty hot with AS5 and a t22 HS on it though.

updating this old thread, i am still kind of worried about the temperature the laptop gets under full load. it runs at a burning 81C and that is unacceptable, i would love to keep this CPU but is there any way i could lower the Temp down a notch?

On earlier PCs I used to run a program CpuIdle, which lowers the CPU temp. Worked like a charm on myIntel P, PII and PIII CPUs. Never had a P4 as I changed to AMD XP, where it also worked. Never tried it on my AMD 64 as that has this function built-in.
It's a shareware proggie, but well worth it!

The direct link from their homepage to the DL-page does not work, so use these links:
http://www.cpuidle.de/download/CpuIdleExtreme95.zip for W9x/ME
http://www.cpuidle.de/download/CpuIdleExtreme.zip for NT/W2K/XP
