T21 Toshiba DVD Drive reads DVDs but not CDs

#1 Post by TheEvilDonut » Thu Aug 16, 2007 12:09 am

Hello.

I just got an old but perfectly enjoyable to use T21 Thinkpad. I formatted it and installed XP Pro SP2 on it, anti-virus, updates... The works.

My only problem is that the DVD-Rom drive will not read any CDs. Only DVDs. When I put a CD in it will not even recognize it. Windows will tell me that the disc is dirty or of an unrecognizable format.

I tried ejecting the drive and reconnecting it...

Anyone else ever had that problem?

Thank you.

Are the CDs commercial or burned? Burned ones (specifically, CD-RW) can have read issues with older machines.

I had the same problem, I think it was a Toshiba SD-C2512. It would read neither CDs, nor CD-R(W), only DVD(-R). It was not a Windows problem, as it wouldn't read a bootable CD at startup. I even tried to reflash the firmware, but the problem remained. At the end I just sold the whole system (with full disclosure of the problem of course).

Actually the problem only appeared a few weeks ago. It was working fine at some point because I managed to install some of my software such as Office and PowerDVD which are all on CDs.

THis is weird as I don't remember installing anything out of the ordinary that would end up causing such a problem.

Toshiba not rreading CD

#7 Post by RRHODY » Mon Aug 20, 2007 8:24 am

I had a Toshiba SD-C2102 in a 600X with W2KPro that wouldn't read CD, Windows said the disk was not formated, or not recognized. Changed to a Toshiba SD-C2612 with same result. Got the firmware from Toshiba web - no difference. Tried a second SD-C2612 with same result. Gave up and changed the DVD - ROM to an LG brand and it works.
Go figure !

Dang. I was afraid that this would be hardware-related. :(

since you installed power DVD it may have changed some drive settings, i installed some cd burning software that caused my drive not to play CD's on my home PC, reinstalling the CDRom drivers worked well.

have you tried that yet?

if you search google there is a procedure that completely removes the drivers.

and it might be a reason why RRHODY's problem was not fixed until he installed a different drive as i would assume that it used the same drivers for all drives.

have you tired using a bootable CD?
