Need some advice on finding a wifi driver

#1 Post by Lightning » Thu Sep 06, 2007 6:54 pm

I'm on my third wifi card trying to find one that works with my T30. I did the 1802 delete and my machin boots right into XP.

My problem is that the T30 doesn't know there's a card in the slot now... so I need a driver (I think) and I need to know how to find the right one.

I can access driverguide OK, but there are different P/N numbers on both sides of the card. How do I ID the card so that the ID could be used to find a driver?

What are the part numbers on the card? Does anything show up under network adapters in device manager as yellow flagged?

What brand cards are you buying? When I was trying to find a card for my A31, I bought an IBM-branded A/B/G card, and it would give a 'device cannot start' error in Windows, and I sold it to a guy who says it's working fine in his T42. I put a generic Intel 2200BG card in, and no problems.

Here's a picture of the card:

Tell me if you need a picture of the opposite side and I'll do it later today.

That's an Intel Pro 2200BG. That's the same mPCI card I have in my R52.

OK, I tried that driver and I'm still not showing any wireless device in control panel, just a big yellow question mark next to the Network Controller. Above that... the Intel Network Adapters shows a working Intel Pr/100 Network Connection. When I pull the cable out, I lose all connectivity. I get the feeling that I'm still missing something here.

Your card could be defective (rare but possible).
Try it in another laptop to check if it's OK.
I had an Intel 2915ABG in my T30 and it worked fine.
If you get one of these, get a generic one, NOT one that was made for IBM (i.e. without FRU numbers on it).

I don't have another IBM notebook around to check it in. I need some sort of diagnostic checklist that I could work against, starting with the driver install and control panel, and network settings.

If anyone wants to give me a To-Do Checklist before I send this card back and just give up... I'm willing to try. Supposedly this card was 100% functional.

My T30 bombed out the other night but it seems to be OK now. After going back to default BIOS settings, I ran the 1802 patch and the machine boots right up into XP.

I've been at this for weeks now, and its driving me bonkers. Tonight I finally got windows to install and recognize the driver, so there no error showing in device manager!!!! That's the good news.

The bad news is that my tray icon shows that the wireless is not working although device manager says the card is working properly. When I mouse over the tray icon, a bubble pops up indicating:

"Wireless Network Connection 2 Not Connected. Click here for more options"

Clicking on that brings up a window that says I have to choose a wireless network. Does that mean I have to set up a totally new wireless network for a home or small office? Or does that mean I have to somehow start the WZC Service?

I'm back to the question about how do I fully enable the new wifi card? Can somebody please explain how you enable these non-stock wifi cards?

One last question I need to ask. My original WiFi card has three (3) connection points; Main, Aux, and over in the corner... an un-marked connector The new cards I've been trying (that supposedly work with a T30) don't have that small black slide-in connector. I hope that is not for the antenna, or is it?
