Putting XP on a T23

#1 Post by DavidNY » Fri Sep 07, 2007 12:51 pm

I have a T23 2647-9LU running Windows 2000.

I'm thinking of putting XP on it.

Does this computer run OK with XP?

A "9LU" huh? It should run it decent enough. Keeping the color depth down to 16 bits, turning off all of the Windows XP "eye candy" options, installing the maximum 1GB of memory and having a fast hard drive (5400RPM or more) will certainly help. What kinds of programs will you be running?

I'm running XP on 2 of them and I'm completely satisfied. In fact, I trashed a 5400 rpm HDD three days ago and pulled out the old one that still had W2K on it. Did a wipe and reinstalled XP. Things did "seem" a little faster before I updated to SP2 but I didn't really spend any time actually checking. Actually....I'm running XP on T23's, a T22, and an A22M without any difficulties.

XP runs fine on all of the T2x series. Max out the memory if you can and everything except for newer games will work.

Runs excellent on my T23... Even Matlab 7.3 (very resource hungry) runs fine! The catch is to have it defragged all the time and install as much memory as you can!

Terrific, thanks for the advice. I'd like to put OneNote on it, and it won't install on Windows 2000.

Because I have a multi licsense copy of Vista Ultimate I installed it on my T23 4U2 just to see what it would do. I am honestly very happy with it's performance, enough so that I have been using it daily for over 6 months. I wouldn't recommend purchasing Vista just to install it on a T23 but it does prove it's a very worthy platform given it's architecture. I had max'd out the ram and upgraded the disk to a 5400 when I had XP installed and I've hardly noticed the difference in speed with the latest Vista patches. Reading text in Vista is outstanding at 1400x1050.

Any issues with using hardware in Vista? I went back to XP on my X61t because Vista wouldn't recognize most of my external HDs.

Sorry to hear it. I've only had one very small issue of not being able to turn on/off the WIFI radio on an R50. Not really a problem with Vista but with IBM's Connection Manager. I've had many external devices that where correctly installed by Vista when first plugged in, hmmm. New OS coupled with new tech hardware coupled with slow updates to IBM middleware might make for a tangled fur ball for awhile.....

Im running XP on my T21, only 800mhz but seems to run a lot quicker than a lot of people expect from a laptop of this age. Seriously, it does everything except games.

As for Vista, each to their own. I'm personally not a fan and think XP is, at the moment, a better OS.

rhubarbcrumble,

I think my opinion said what I intended, the T23 is designed well enough to run a demanding OS and remains functional and transparent enough to use daily. An OS debate was not implied nor eluded to. I agree that you are using the best OS for your achictecture as the T21 and T23 are not the same internally.

Ive ran XP Pro w/ XP2 on my T23 for about years now with no problems. Currently has a 7200rpm drive and 512mb memory. I had 1gb memory before but didnt notice a lot of difference so I sold a stick. A 7.2k drive is a must have IMO. Sometimes it feels just as quick as my X31.
