puting in a new HD in a T20
and I get this error:
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
I've tried resetting the HD, changing the bios to not read network, changed the bios to "default", undid the battery and HD and reinstalled and all the different permutations that go along with this.. any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!
Make sure that the BIOS sees the HDD ... also make sure that you have 'boot from network' disabled in BIOS. You might also want to look into this thread:

Re: puting in a new HD in a T20
Surely that error is the nic card trying to get an IP address so it can contact a PXE Server to do a PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) Boot ... which is expected if it can see no bootable device locally ... though I wouldn't expect that error if there is an unformatted disk installed ...FIRSTJONTAR wrote:and I get this error:

1st check the Disk has no jumper installed to set master/slave/cable select - if there is one remove it (this can cause the disk to be unrecognised).
Then, as Robby suggests, either boot with a boot floppy or even better an OS installation CD to see if it sees the disk.

SO.. the bios is set right.. the HD didn't have a shunt and still no go. The DVD/CD-Rom works with the other HD.. It isn't reading ( I think) the cd I made with the WDigital tools nor my Windows XP Pro CD... Any thoughts?
(p.s. I've no floppy on this unit)

Take out any network and/or modem card (MiniPCI) and try it again.
Press F12 upon booting and select Boot from CD with your Windows CD in.

Take a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual here, for more parts info.

Thanks all..
I ended up having to download a copy of xp (which the dvd/cd read), installing and puting my Key Code in. I had dissengaged the lan/modem card, but it didn't make any difference. Where I noticed the difference was that I had a recover (gateway) cd that the drive would read. That was the clue that led me to try a different CD. Thanks for all the help!
