Hi! T-30 Owner - Few Questions

#1 Post by MintyMadness » Fri Sep 21, 2007 7:51 am

Hi everbody! First post here! :D

Love the forums, 1st and foremost, been browsing for a while, and decided to register. My name is Jeremy, and I live in Missouri (USA). I bought my wife a T30 ( I have owned Thinkpads since I had a 600E when I was 14 :))

A few questions I have, as I am looking to upgrade it a little bit.

1.) Has anyone been able to achieve installing a higher clocked proc, than a 2.2 or 2.4? I know heat is an issue, but I am part of a PC modding community (I won't post hte link yet, as I don't know if that's ok or not..) and will be trying to fabricate a sort of custom peltier cooler for it. Will the motherboard accept a higher clocked proc than a 2.4?

2.) Is there a certain type of memory I should run? (Non-ECC etc.) I couldn't find where it said yay or nay via the lenovo website :(

3.) Her DVD/CDRW drive has been acting qwirky. It powers on and all, but it doesn't eject or become available until after you physically eject the drive and pop it back in.. I have tried resetting hte cmos, and all, to no avail.. Has anyone had trouble with this? Is the drive becoming borked? (all the better I guess if it is, gives me an excuse to get a DVD-RW :D)

Thanks for the replies in advance, and I look forward to contributing to this community!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

T30s have come with both 2.2 and 2.4 processors, so upgrading to one of these shouldn't be a problem. I've never done it myself on this machine type, but would imagine that the faster processors have to be accompanied by stronger fans...

As for memory, as anywhere, brand names rule. I have 2 x 1Gb PC2700 Micron chips installed in my daughter's T30 (2366-97U) and that thing flies by P4M standards....

Looks like you might have a good excuse to get a DVD-burner...:D

Welcome aboard!

Yes, the 2.6GHz CPU has been confirmed to work, in several threads here. Here is one of the most prominent. You can search the T2x & T30 conference for "T30" AND "CPU", and you will see quite a few threads that you can read through...

And yes, you can post a link to your PC Modding community. You can even add the link to your signature if you'd like...

Hi again,

Sorry for such a long response time, things got kind of crazy around the home front for a minute. Thanks for all of the answers, I appreciate the information and the link :)

Now, I have been researching for a grip, and I can't seem to find anything that confirms nor denies that a T-30 has run a centrino processor. I just assume it hasn't been tried, as the bios won't recognize the processor. Would that be correct? I bought (and am typing on now) this laptop for my wife on eBay for about $325 shipped. Not a killer deal, but not bad at all (I got it around this time last year... ) I would love to get it a processor that is quick, but I don't want to go higher on the clock speed, for power reasons. If this thing had a decently fast video card, I might consider it. But if that were the case, I doubt it would be her laptop :P

Either way. What is the lowest clocked P4 or better this thing can run, while still having a moderate L2? (this is a 1.8 with 256 for L2 I think..) 2366-44U is the model type.

Thanks again for the help guys! :)

You can't put a PM/Centrino processor in a T30...otherwise I'd have had an A31P with PM a long time ago...no way of making it fit and work.

BTW, P4M 2.4 and 2.6 are nothing to sneeze at...with maxed-out RAM, these things fly. And a 7200rpm drive helps...

Awesome, I can stop trying to look now that i have confirmation 8)

I totally agree. Just with upgrading the Ram to 2GB and nothing else would make it faster. I'm really starting to think that the drive is dying. I haven't tried to read a disk in a while, but the last one I did was a Vista DVD (by the way, this thing got pretty bogged with 768mb of ram and vista  ) and it worked ok.. she has tried to burn a CD, and it doesn't work at all. I checked and it is a DVD-CD/RW, says it on the drive...

As far as a 2.4 or 2.6, I would love to get one! + a new battery, or extra battery (I use this to do website work in the evening..) It would greatly improve it's performance. I think I am just spoiled by my Core Duo inspiron @ work. :P

Thanks again for all the info!
