Hmm... don't seem to have access to my high resolution scans of a T23 motherboard at the moment :( . On my map of the board (two links at the top of this thread):

where is it located?

That connector is probably for the optional rfid asset tag device. It is pictured in the topside photo http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_t2x/mobo_top_72_legend.jpg in the J3 area.

Yes. I just looked at the datasheet for that part and those two pins are used for the RFID interface.

Top side J3.

If you pull your HDD out between the drive plastic cage and the front of the laptop there is a slot about 1/4" by 3/4" and about 2 3/4" long. It is exposed so that something can be slid into the slot and locked in place.

Any ideas.

Thanks all.

I think one of my T2x systems has this. From memory, it is a black, plastic "stick", with about the dimensions you stated. I believe it's a way of reading the system information for asset tracking.

Yes, The rfid device fit in next to the hard drive beneath the hard drive cover. I believe it was used so companies could keep track of when computers left the building and when (or if ) they came back.

if i do understand the datasheet correctly
it contains the "tracking option" withot any additional device,
range is estimated about 70cm to 1.20m

the "stick" ist the security chip, only for selected T23 model (hmm s149)
