Ethernet

#1 Post by kengeo » Wed Oct 10, 2007 5:28 pm

I have a internet connection problem when connecting to my router
with the ethernet cable, the icon on the taskbar shows it as connected at 100.0Mbps but when I open I.E. it gives 'Page cannot be Displayed' but if I plug my wi-fi card in I can access the 'net' with
no problem. I would like to get the cable connection working as sometimes I take my T21 to friends that have only cable modems.
I have checked the Internet Options settings against my 'desktop'
(which uses a cable) & they are the same. Any clues??

Have you checked ipconfig to make sure both the "desktop" and the t21 wired connection are in the same subgroup?

Open a command window type in (without ") "ipconfig /all" and note what it says about the ethernet adapter.

Ignoring "physical address". the only difference between the 2 machines should be the last grouping of "IP Address" (the last three numbers). Subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP server and DNS servers should be identical.

I've seen instances where the "icon" will say it's connected, but it's not really because all those numbers are different and it's trying to connect to a whole different network.

If that's not your problem, let us know.

Thanks for helping, I went to "ipconfig" & although the lay out was not identical between the two machines , the main differences were:- in the line 'Dhcp Enabled' it said NO, & in the line 'Default Gateway' it was blank. Also in the 'Windows IP Config' area, the line 'Primary Dns Suffix' it too was blank. I have no idea how to correct what appears to be the problem, so any pointers would be
welcomed. Cheers.

Your need to set your local area connection tcp/ip properties to "Obtain an ip address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
