Answering my own question, yes, they will boot off of a DVD -R and won't boot off of a DVD +R. I just booted Suse10.2 and it's installing now after some hard disc reconfiguration.

The type of DVD drive you have will dictate whether or not you can use DVD+ and/or DVD- media.

Did a complete restore off the 3 cd set, according to nero that dvd burner nec+6500 handles both + and - discs. It lies :D.... it reads + R's just fine, just won't boot off of one.
I though it was interesting that on the first restore from the CD's it did not put the ibm service partition back on but after completely deleting the partitions on the drive with a normal XP disc it did so I ended up as initially received when I bought it.
It would be nice if that restore package had a few more initial utilities to allocated the disc, on putting in the bigger drive it took all of it for windows, minor annoyance.
