T30 memory slot research

#1 Post by petteram » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:54 am

I would like to do some research on which models who has this problem.
But then I need help from all of you in the community.
I need the modelnumber of the models with the 1 slot that isnt working. And I will start with the 2366 series.
Of course I need as many as possible to make this correct.
Please provide me with the 3 digits after the 2366 modelnumber.

I think any motherboard the is from a t30 has the issue. If there is a correct motherboard you would be better off having people post the boards that have NOT had the problem, and take them off the list as people have issues with them.

If you open the lid at the bottom (nearest the back of the TP), you should find the motherboard's ASM P/N: and FRU PN: on the white plastic that 'folds' around the modem/wifi card.

See also my post with T30 mobo-numbers here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=51143

Replacement mobo numbers have also been introduced:
old assy : 26P8205, newer: 91P7689
old assy : 26P8328, newer: 91P7692
old assy2: 91P7211, newer: 91P7695 (also found as 26P8422)
old assy2: 91P7212, newer: 91P7698 (also found as 26P8423)

My T30 2366-87G originally came with a 26P8423 mobo.
It was faulty (but not because of the memory slots!) so I replaced it with a used 26P8422. I forgot out of which model this came.
No problems with the memory slots on this 26P8422, I run it with 2x 1GB Samsung RAM sticks.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

This is just to see IF there is a pattern between the fault and the different models.
I have a 2366-N6G and have no problems with my 1Gb installed memory. (2x512)

I've got a 2366-85U. Running 1.5GB of RAM. One slot (towards the front edge of the machine) is problematic. Some days I've got 1GB RAM functional, on good days I've got 1.5GB.

I have T30-2366-81U

Before I opened up the cover to my memory slots...

I had 1.8GHz P4 with 512MB RAM

I opened up the cover to memory slots to verify that I was using both slots.

I opened up the cover to mother board to view 26P8205

I closed both covers.

Afterwards, my T30 refused to boot.

I opened up the cover to memory slots
and removed IBM FRU 10K0031
Mitsubishi PC2100S 2533-0-A1
MH32D64AKQJ-75
2451L21
from slot closest to front.

Now I have 1.8GHz P4 with 256K RAM

Moral of the story...

If both of your memory slots are working,

Do NOT open up cover to memory slots!!!!

Edit-01: Would someone kindly tell me where I can purchase one 1GB of memory?

Edit-02: After opening the cover to memory slots, I didn't know whether I had two working 256K DIMM(s) or one working 512K DIMM. So, I removed the DIMM in the front slot, in order to see the part number. I planned to "google" part number to determine size. I promptly placed the DIMM back in its original slot.

Edit-03: I unplugged the AC adapter and powered-off my machine, but I neglected to remove the battery. Instructions for removing DIMM(s) here...
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42404

Edit-04: The most discouraging part is that I thought that the worse that could happen -- would be that I would lose use of one of my memory slots. However, after trying several times to re-seat the DIMM, my machine refuses to reboot (with original DIMM in original front slot).

Edit-05: IBM List of PC2100 & PC2700 Part Numbers...

So does anyone know what the actual problem is?

I'd like to fix mine properly, the paper trick is only a band-aid and I hate to "fix" things that way.

Rob, Kingston and others have the correct 1GB strip. I got one on eBay for around $40. (Take a look at the first page of this thread and you'll see a picture of the Kingston strip: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0 )

I am not clear on the exact problem. There has been quite a bit written about it.

Try re-seating your existing memory strips a few times. It takes me a couple of tries to get both slots working again.
