T23 stopped booting

#1 Post by goofyGAguy » Tue Oct 23, 2007 8:27 pm

Hello folks. I need some help with my T23. My brother was using it on battery alone, and it shut down. Now when the power button is pressed, I hear the hard drive spin, all the lights on the keyboard illuminate for 2-3 seconds, and the fan starts and STAYS on. The screen is black. There are no beeps. Any ideas are appreciated as always. Thanks.

P.S. The behavior is the same whether attempting to boot from a known good battery or the power brick.

Hard to say exactly what might be the problem but here's several things you can try (these are all assuming that you are powering the system via the AC adapter):

- press the Fn+F7 key combination at least twice after turning the system on (forces activation of LCD monitor if it's trying to output on the external video port)
- connect an external video monitor and see if that works properly
- remove the MiniPCI card (probably a modem or modem/wireless combo) prior to powering up
- try my TAB(tm) boot procedure: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 898#341898

Hi Ray. Thanks for the rapid response. I pressed pretty much every function key combination that exists, with no change. I had already tried removing the MPCI card; didn't help. I don't have an external monitor available at home. I will take it in to work tomorrow and try one there. Sorry, your trademarked boot procedure had no effect either. This doesn't seem to be the normal blink of death scenario. :??:

If you or anyone has any more ideas I'm all ears.

OK, got the T23 to boot somehow, but it's clearly feeling poorly. I'm getting a disk check every time, plus frequent blue screens with message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Any ideas? Thanks.

You'll probably need to re-install OS. to begin with.

Does it "see" the HDD when you set the boot to "diagnostics"?

Hi George, thanks for replying.

The laptop has a fairly recent installation of 2000 Pro via the recovery disks. As for setting the boot to "diagnostics" I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you referring to Safe Mode? Thanks.

Update - The culprit seems to have been a bad stick of RAM.
