the r40 is better...while its clock speed is slower (1.4ghz vs 1.8ghz) it is a different processor technology, therefore comparing raw clock speed is ineffective completely.

compare a 1.4ghz Centrino to a 1.8ghz Pentium 4...completely different in every way.

Performance-wise there is little difference, but the Centrino R40 does have the upperhand.
Also, the R40 has USB2 (T30=USB1) and could have a Firewire port.
The T30 has a serial port, the R40 does NOT.
The T30 has 16MB video RAM, the R40 has 16 or 32MB, check your model.
Both will support up to 2GB memory, and the R40 does not have the T30 memory slot problem.
Most T30s and R40s come with built-in WiFi, check your model.
I could go on, but I think I've made my point, take the R40, mostly because of USB2 and no memory-slot problems.

I too would go for the R40 due to its USB2. However, if weight is an important consideration, the T30 is lighter.
