Use T23 battery cells and electronics on a T30 battery case

#1 Post by CALATO » Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:43 pm

I have a T30 laptop with a bad battery and new T23 battery, but the T23 battery won't fit on a T30 laptop.. My idea is to install all the internals including electronics of the T23 battery (10.8 V - 4000 mAH) on the T30 battery case..

What do you think about that ??

The T30 come with a 10.8 V and 4.400 mAH..

This two batteries are very similar and the T30 battery fits and works into a T23 laptop but not the other way...

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

It is true that you cannot put a T2x battery into a T30 laptop. You may have noticed that there is a corner "missing" on the T30 battery because of a piece of plastic inside the battery T30's battery bay. If you intend on using more T2x batteries inside the T30, then I would say it would be easier, in the long run, to see if you can remove the plastic tower in the battery bay. That way you would not have to transfer the battery electronics and cells and you could use any T2x or T30 battery. I do not have a T30 to open up and try this on so I am just assuming that there is nothing important inside that area.

I would guess that the main reason why the T30 batteries were built this way is because of the higher capacity (4400mAH) over the T23 batteries (3600 to 4000mAH). IBM may have wanted to insure that people only use the higher capacity battery.

thanks rkawakami!!

My problem rigth know is only electronics. The cells replacement is easy. I already open the batteries

the question are :

the T23 battery (4000 mAH) will burn or explode in the T30 laptop???

or maybe overcharged ???

what do you think??

That I do not know for sure.

I wouldn't think that the T23 battery could overcharge inside a T30. There were at least two different battery capacities for the T2x series (maybe three). The charging circuit on the motherboard should have been designed to accommodate them. I'm not an expert on battery charging technology but with the "smart" circuits inside both the battery and the laptop there should be a good chance that the battery will be safely charged. When you are charging the battery for the first time inside the T30, check on the temperature of the battery pack and make sure it is not getting too hot.
